Family flees home blast - Northern Territory News

A PALMERSTON family has had a lucky escape after fireworks stashed in the rear of their van that they thought were dead suddenly ignited, causing a fire that forced them from their home.

The family from Durack had returned from setting off their crackers on Territory Day and decided they should pick up the used fireworks and dispose of them at home.

But after they went to bed some of the fireworks still in the back of their van ignited about 11.30pm, destroying the vehicle and causing a fire that damaged the garage and part of the home.

A child in the house raised the alarm after hearing a smoke detector go off.

Luckily, no one was injured during the incident.

"I heard a bang ... and a second bang so I went to the front door and I could hear screaming," said Jessica Limbrick, 28, who lives across the road from where the fire occurred.

"I got my mum and dad up and they started to help put out the fire while I called the fireys," she said.

Police fire investigation officer Mathew Francis said the family was extremely lucky because a fire crew was already at a nearby road fighting a blaze and was able to respond quickly.

"It is their quick response time that stopped this fire from spreading," Mr Francis said yesterday.

"They extinguished the fire inside the vehicle and inside the house, then they have proceeded to make the house safe."

Mr Francis said although the family thought they were doing the right thing by collecting their used fireworks, they should have made extra sure the crackers were completely out and should not have stored them in the van.

"Make sure that your fireworks are totally out, wet them, and don't put them in your cars until the morning because there is still a chance of a smouldering and then an ignition," he said.
