In businesses I?ve observed, Finance departments often face silent derision or disrespect. Part of it is an us-versus-them mentality that comes out of the front office staff who feels their jobs are more difficult because they deal with customers (compared to Finance, who deal with numbers). And no one from the front office sends memos to the back office saying ?please spend less time crunching the numbers? but it can feel like the back office is constantly memo-ing the front office with ?watch this expenditure? or ?spend less on client lunches?.

Unfortunately, this view is supported by management at all levels that give Finance the nasty job of accounts receivable, the inputting-heavy job of accounts payable, and the dull job of budget forecasting. Compared to the highly creative marketing department and the edge-of-the-seat, in-the-trenches feeling of the sales department, finance is like the broccoli side dish on a plate of steak and fries.

But it doesn?t have to be this way! Finance departments shouldn?t be relegated to the back office in the hopes that their sharp pencils won?t poke a customer in the eye! Finance departments can and should play a far more important role in the organization. Here are some ideas. Finance should be more about business strategy than number prophecy. When the Finance department hounds the sales managers to get in their budgets and then turns them around for a final target budget for the year, their role is reduced to mere numerical interpreter. But what if Finance sat down with sales and talked to them about how their numbers connected to expected outcomes? Finance should be more about opportunity. Many sales managers have some limited view into which customers are sending business. But the view isn?t always perfect. Or complete. Finance should get involved to show how a customer is really impacting the business? bottom line. If Finance and Sales talked to each other, Sales might be shocked to discover that their biggest client is actually less valuable than expected because of the amount of work involved in keeping them as clients. Finance should be selling, too. When Finance gets the job of following up on accounts receivables, they can potentially do more harm than good. Finance people are highly skilled at numbers, and they might be good ?people-oriented? staff, but they are rarely trained in the art of sales. However, when a Finance person, tasked with accounts receivables, gets adequate training in receivables AND customer service AND sales, their success rate at getting the receivables paid can increase, but so will their success rate at winning more business.

There are so many more opportunities, too. Businesses should be using their accounts payable list as a prospecting list. They should be temporarily swapping roles between Finance and Sales for brief ?see-how-the-other-side-does-it? days to enable new appreciation and new connections. Finance should sit in on sales calls to see why Sales sometimes feels like they need to bend the rules to close the deal (and Sales should shadow the work of Finance so they know what work needs to happen at the back-end if they don?t assess risk adequately during the sale).

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV, are common, important, and
preventable causes of morbidity, mortality, disability, lost-productivity, and health care
costs. In the United States, more than 65 million individuals are living with an STD, the
majority of which are incurable viral infections. Approximately 15 million new sexually
transmitted infections occur annually in the U.S. In the United States, approximately
493,000 individuals have died from AIDS, and 800,000-900,00 people are living with
HIV disease. Many sexually transmitted infections can cause adverse pregnancy
outcomes including miscarriages, stillbirths, intrauterine growth restriction and perinatal
(mother-to-infant) infections. Some STDs can cause infertility or lead to ectopic
pregnancy among women and one, the human papillomavirus, can cause cervical and
anogenital cancer. Furthermore, other STDs facilitate HIV transmission.

The Problem and the Process

Primary prevention of STD infection is an important health priority. Unfortunately there
are no STD vaccines, except for hepatitis B vaccine, and topical microbicides to prevent
STDs are not available. Beyond mutual lifelong monogamy among uninfected couples,
condom-use is the only method for reducing the risk of HIV infection and STDs available
to sexually active individuals.

Recently, a number of Federal agencies sponsored a workshop to answer the following
question: ?What is the scientific evidence on the effectiveness of latex male condom-use
to prevent STD transmission during vaginal intercourse?? This workshop was attended
by 180 persons, and the data from numerous peer-reviewed published studies were
discussed. Following the workshop, a panel of 28 experts worked to develop this report.
The sessions included review of published information on the properties and user
patterns of the male latex condoms for vaginal intercourse and included data from
studies on pregnancy prevention. Focused research studies have documented the high
effectiveness of condoms for prevention of pregnancy. The data associated with
condom use in eight specific STDs were considered in detail, including HIV infection,
gonorrhea, chlamydial infection (including gonococcal and chlamydial pelvic
inflammatory disease), syphilis, chancroid, trichomoniasis, genital herpes, and genital
HPV infection and associated diseases (i.e. cervical dysplasia, cervical cancer and
genital warts).

The meeting was not intended to make public health policy recommendations regarding
the role of condoms in HIV/STD prevention policy and programs.

Assessment of the Data

In general, the Panel found the published epidemiology literature to be inadequate to
definitively answer the question posed to the workshop participants. Most studies
reviewed did not employ a prospective design, which is the optimal method to assess
the effectiveness of condoms in preventing infection.

i Conclusions on STDs Transmitted by Genital Secretions

The published data documenting effectiveness of the male condom were strongest for
HIV. The Panel concluded that, based on a meta-analysis of published studies ?always?
users of the male condom significantly reduced the risk of HIV infection in men and
women. These data provided strong evidence for the effectiveness of condoms in
preventing HIV transmission in both men and women who engage in vaginal intercourse.
The Panel also concluded that the consistency of findings across four epidemiological
studies of gonorrhea indicated that the latex male condom could reduce the risk of
gonorrhea for men.

The strongest evidence for potential effectiveness of condoms on other STDs
transmitted by genital secretions (i.e. gonorrhea in women, chlamydial infection and
trichomoniasis) was the laboratory-based studies on the properties of the male latex
condom and the strength of the evidence for condom use reducing the risk of HIV
transmission in men and women and gonorrhea in men. The Panel concluded, however,
that because of limitations in study designs there was insufficient evidence from the
epidemiological studies on these diseases to draw definite conclusions about the
effectiveness of the latex male condom in reducing the transmission of these diseases.
Conclusions on Genital Ulcer Diseases

The Panel agreed that the published epidemiologic data were insufficient to draw
meaningful conclusions about the effectiveness of the latex male condom to reduce the
risk of transmission of genital ulcer diseases (genital herpes, syphilis and chancroid).
Conclusions on HPV

For HPV, the Panel concluded that there was no epidemiologic evidence that condom
use reduced the risk of HPV infection, but study results did suggest that condom use
might afford some protection in reducing the risk of HPV-associated diseases, including
warts in men and cervical neoplasia in women.

Summary

The Panel stressed that the absence of definitive conclusions reflected inadequacies of
the evidence available and should not be interpreted as proof of the adequacy or
inadequacy of the condom to reduce the risk of STDs other than HIV transmission in
men and women and gonorrhea in men. To definitely answer the remaining questions
about condom effectiveness for preventing STD infections will require well-designed and
ethically sound clinical studies.

Defendant Rovio has infringed and continues to infringe, directly, indirectly, literally, under the doctrine of equivalents, contributorily, and/or through the inducement of other, one or more claims of the '565 patent. Rovio makes, sells, uses, imports, and/or offers to sell infringing applications, including but not limited to Angry Birds for iPhone and Angry Birds for Android, which infringe at least claim 27 of '565 patent under 35 U.S.C. ? 271.

Besides adding the five game studios to its lawsuit, Lodsys also dropped Vietnamese developer Wulven Games from the suit, making for a total of eleven developers and companies targeted by the suit. All told, Lodsys has targeted 37 entities in suits related to a number of patents, with defendants ranging from small developers to major firms such as HP, Best Buy, The New York Times Company and EA.

Apple previously stepped forward to assist iOS developers being targeted by Lodsys, claiming that Apple is "indisputably licensed" to the intellectual property in question and that third-party developers are covered by that license. China bus blaze 'kills 41' (AFP)

BEIJING (AFP) ? A fire on an overcrowded bus carrying flammable materials killed 41 passengers in central China on Friday, state television reported, in one of the country's worst road accidents this year.

The double-decker bus was taking people to southern Hunan province when it caught fire early on Friday morning on a highway, China Central Television (CCTV) said, adding the cause of the disaster is still being investigated.

Five passengers and the driver were pulled alive from the overnight bus, which was reportedly only designed to carry 35 passengers but had 47 people on board.

CCTV said there were "flammable materials" on board, but did not provide further details.

A police officer told Xinhua the fire raged for two hours and completely destroyed the bodies of the victims, who would only be identified after authorities carried out DNA tests on the charred corpses.

Photos of the tragedy showed the bus had been completely destroyed by the blaze, leaving only a burnt-out shell.

The report said the survivors, one of whom was very seriously injured, have been rushed to hospital.

A government spokesman in Xinyang, where the accident occurred, told AFP there was no confirmed death toll. The police and fire departments in the city both refused to comment.

China's roads are among the world's most dangerous, with traffic and safety laws widely flouted. Drivers looking to maximise profits often load their buses with too many passengers, sometimes triggering deadly incidents.

In 2010, more than 65,200 people died in road accidents -- around 178 fatalities a day -- according to official statistics.

This year has also seen several high-profile road accidents.

In March, at least three people died and up to 80 were injured when a bus driver in the northwestern region of Xinjiang lost control of the vehicle and collided with a passing passenger train.

The bus, which was carrying mostly students on their way to school, broke through a protective fence next to railway tracks in Xinjiang's capital Urumqi and hit the train.

In another accident in February, 12 people were killed when a minibus toppled into a reservoir in the southeastern province of Fujian, after the driver apparently swerved to avoid a motorbike.

Last December, 21 people died -- including 14 schoolchildren -- and 25 more were injured in two horrific car accidents, one of which involved more than 100 vehicles.
