Analysis: Saudi summer oil burn should decline this year

DUBAI/KHOBAR (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia is likely to burn less crude in its power plants this summer thanks to rising output from dedicated gas fields and gas that would be associated with any increase in oil output to make up for lower Iranian production.

Last summer the world's leading oil exporter burned an average of 730,000 barrels a day (bpd) of crude for electricity to keep the population cool in the hottest months from July to the end of September, official figures indicate.

Hundreds of thousands of barrels of the kingdom's biggest export will again go up in smoke at power plants each day this summer, but the volume of oil used for power is likely to fall.

More supply from the Karan gas field and a likely rise in crude output, which would bring a bonus benefit of more gas as well, should save at least 100,000 bpd in crude use.

"We have spent a lot of money on gas ... and we have many tricks in our pocket in the summer. When we peak in summer, we will surge our gas," Saudi Oil Minister Ali al-Naimi said last week.

Naimi said some 500 million cubic feet a day (mcfd) more gas, or around 90,000 barrels of oil equivalent (boed), would be made available for three or four months.

"So don't think we are just saying, 'OK, the crude demand is going to go up'," he told reporters in Doha. "We are far more concerned about crude burn. Not because we want to export it, but because it is a shame to burn it."

Most countries outside the Middle East cut back oil-fired power generation long ago in favor of gas, nuclear and renewable energy sources.

But in a country sitting on the world's largest oil reserves, the consumption of oil for power rose by an implied 260 percent from 2004 to 2010, official figures available through the Joint Oil Data Initiative (JODI) indicated.

While crude output from Saudi oilfields is constrained by OPEC production limits, state-run Saudi Aramco aims to find gas that can be pumped independently to supply rapidly rising demand for electricity.

Saudi Aramco now manages known gas reserves of 279 trillion cubic feet, the fourth largest in the world, and hopes to increase its gross gas production from 10.2 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd) in 2010 to over 15 bcfd by 2015.

While it has raised output significantly over the past few years, the company has not been able to keep up with a 6 percent per year increase in demand, driven by population growth and a boom in petrochemicals and other industries.

"Whenever there is gas, we are utilizing it. We are always trying to use gas rather than other types of fuel. Gas is cleaner, cheaper and more efficient," Ali Bin Saleh Al-Barrak, the chief executive of Saudi Electricity (SEC), told Reuters.

"We are expecting more gas to come this year and in the future."

About half of Saudi power demand is now met with gas, but in a sign SEC does not expect to obtain enough gas to replace oil soon, SEC announced plans this month to build another big fuel oil plant.

Low fixed gas prices paid by industry of just 0.75 U.S. cents per million British thermal units are the major impediment to the unlocking of gas reserves.

OIL BURN

After rising from an average of 145,000 bpd in 2004 to 526,000 bpd in 2010, implied Saudi oil burning was little changed at 522,000 bpd in total last year, according to an analysis of JODI data by HSBC.

Implied crude burning - or crude that cannot be accounted for after exports, refinery intake and changes in stocks - doubled from 2008 to 2009 as a 1 million bpd fall in crude production at the height of the global financial crisis cut the availability of associated gas.

A 1.15 million bpd rise in average daily crude production from 2010 to 2011 - as Riyadh filled a Libyan oil supply drop - would have added roughly 70,000 boed of gas, HSBC's Saudi energy sector analyst John Tottie estimated.

"Crude burning was unchanged in 2011, but there was some more diesel and gasoil in the power sector mix," Tottie said. "Higher associated gas and Karan probably contributed."

Last summer, record imports of diesel, gasoil and fuel oil, which is used to generate power in parts of the country far from oil or gas fields, contributed to the first hiatus in the rise of crude burning since 2003.

Tightening western sanctions on Iranian oil sales, particularly a European ban from July 1, offers Riyadh a chance to pump even more oil and associated gas this summer. Because the kingdom holds most of the world's spare oil capacity, it will be the biggest source of alternative supply.

Last year's 9.31 million bpd average Saudi crude production could be surpassed this year. Production averaged 9.84 million bpd in the first two months of 2012, Saudi industry sources have told Reuters, compared with 8.77 million bpd in the same period of 2011, according to JODI data.

As 50 to 60 percent of Saudi gas comes from oilfields, another 1 million bpd increase in crude production above current levels could increase associated gas output by 5 to 6 percent, which could further increase the amount of crude for export by reducing the amount burnt in power plants.

"Burning crude oil is a crime," independent Kuwaiti energy analyst Kamel al Harami said.

"This summer, I think Saudi will depend more on gas and buying oil products and less on burning their own crude."

Vital to this effort will be the ramp-up of Karan, Saudi Aramco's first non-associated offshore gas field, which is expected to lift raw gas production from 400 mcfd last summer to 1.5 bcfd by June to 1.8 bcfd in summer 2013.

"Gas supplies coming from Karan this year are very important as a substitute for crude oil burning," Sadad al Husseini, a former top executive at Aramco said.

Of Karan's 1.1 bcfd output increase since last summer, industry observers estimate about 75 percent (or 146,000 boed) could go to power plants after removing liquids and sulphur.

Karan might not be the only addition to Saudi gas supplies. Oil minister Naimi said last week a little-known gas field in the Gulf, called Rabib, could boost supplies by 500 mcfd, or nearly 90,000 boed, sometime this year.

Information about Rabib is scarce, but Naimi said its gas could be pumped into turbines with minimal treatment. An industry analyst said as much as 95 percent of Rabib's gross gas output could be usable by power plants.

With Rabib and Karan both running flat out and sending all usable output to power plants, which is far from certain, that would mean around 236,000 boed could be saved.

A 1 million bpd crude output rise could add roughly another 73,000 boed of associated gas, allowing for a 25 percent reduction for removal of liquids and impurities.

The overall impact on Saudi oil consumption is impossible to predict accurately because power demand is tightly bound to temperatures; it is unclear how much oil it will pump; and the power generation mix will change as these variables shift.

Nearly half the potential increase from the two dedicated gas fields could be canceled out by the annual increase in Saudi demand for power generation, which HSBC estimated in a March study would amount to 100,000 boed, or 600 mcfd.

"There are competing demands for that gas, and the power sector has been last in line," Tottie said.

"This means that Saudi Aramco may need to meet its 15 bcf/d target just to avoid burning even more oil ... It's a moving target."

Inside Best Buy: An Anonymous Store Manager Speaks About Recent Changes

bestbuyFrom the outside, we early adopters see Best Buy as a dinosaur in a dying world. The company recently announced the closing of 50 stores in the U.S. and 400 layoffs, mostly in corporate. It would be easy to say "Good riddance" and ignore the slow decline of bricks and mortar, but I wanted to speak to someone inside the company. I got a hold of a manager who wished to remain anonymous and was considered a solid and dedicated employee. I asked him what it's like inside his store right now. "Basically what's going on is that we got to work and heard about the 50 store closings and we started wondering about job security. Immediately my reaction was 'Oh, crap, what am I going to do?'" he said.

Obese baby girls at increased risk of heart disease ... - Hamara Health

Washington, Mar 30 (ANI): Heavier female babies are more likely to develop diabetes and related metabolic risks when they grow up as compared to their male counterparts, a new study has revealed.

The incidence of early onset type-2 diabetes has been rising in stride with the epidemic of childhood obesity.

Previous studies have shown that cardiovascular risk factors in childhood and adults are associated with birth weight.

This study investigated the associations between birth weight and body fat distribution in early childhood with future metabolic risk factors such as obesity, insulin resistance and high blood pressure.

"What happens to a baby in the womb affects future heart disease and diabetes risk when the child grows up," Rae-Chi Huang, the study?s lead author from The University of Western Australia in Perth, said.

"We found that female babies are particularly prone to this increased risk and females who are at high risk of obesity and diabetes-related conditions at age 17 are showing increased obesity as early as 12 months of age," Huand said.

In this study, the researchers examined 1,053 17-year-olds from an Australian birth cohort. Follow-up of study participants took place at eight intervals between one and 17 years of age.

In addition to birth weight and BMI, researchers took measurements of blood pressure and levels of insulin, blood glucose, triglycerides and cholesterol.

The 17-year-old girls with the greater waist circumference, triglycerides, insulin, and lower HDL-cholesterol (good cholesterol) were also heavier from birth with consistently higher BMI thereafter. In contrast, birth weight had no statistical impact on metabolic risk factors in males.

"These findings are significant because in our modern western society, we are seeing increased maternal obesity and gestational diabetes, which means there will also be a rise in female newborns that are born large for their age.

"Our results can be applied to public health messages targeting both maternal health and measures in early infancy regarding the prevention of childhood obesity and its consequences," Huang added.

The study has been published in The Endocrine Society?s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism (JCEM). (ANI)

Crystal Bell: 'The Vampire Diaries' Recap: The Biggest Game Changer Ever

Note: Do not read on if you have not seen Season 3, Episode 18 of The CW's "The Vampire Diaries," entitled, "The Murder of One."

"The Vampire Diaries" is never predictable, and if there was ever an episode to justify that, it's "The Murder of One."

Okay, so maybe I should have suspected that someone was going to die during tonight's episode because of the title, but it didn't make it any easier to watch Elena shoot Finn with a White Oak dagger, knowing that Bonnie had reversed the binding spell, freeing the Originals.

But that wasn't even the shocking part. Now brace yourselves for this game-changer. After Finn was killed, Sage went looking for revenge -- but she didn't get very far. Why? Because she died too, as did the vampire that she turned.

This means that if the Originals die, so do all of the vampires that they turned in the last 1,000 years. If you haven't been counting, that's all of them. Every. Last. One. Of. Them. That means no more Stefan, no more Caroline and no more Damon.

Can you say game-changer?! Of course, this doesn't mean that Stefan and Elena are going to give up on killing Klaus. That is until Caroline reminds Elena that if Klaus dies, Tyler dies. And there's always a possibility that Klaus could have turned Rose, who turned Katherine, who turned Damon, who turned Caroline.

Eek. I think I'm going to need to start a family tree to wrap my head around all of this.

In even more shocking news, Stefan has seemingly come to some sort of realization that Klaus isn't worth all of his anger and energy. He then tells Elena that he loves her, but he knows that she also loves Damon. Elena tries to dig herself out of this hole by telling Stefan that she doesn't love Damon, but hello, he's a vampire. Reading emotions is kind of like his specialty.

But that wasn't it. In a twist ending, we discover that the last White Oak dagger has gone missing, and it's all thanks to Alaric's vampire-hating alter ego. You see, Damon was ordered to bring all of the daggers back to Klaus, but when he went to get Alaric's, they couldn't find it, which means that the dagger -- which could wipe out an entire line of vampires, including Damon -- is missing, and the only person who knows it's whereabouts is a psychopath. Great.

Well, Damon did force Alaric to wear his ring because you know, with his track record, he could have ended up dead by the end of the episode without it. Of course, someone could have very well ended up dead because he was wearing it, and now an entire line of vampires is in some serious danger if they don't find that stake.

Now before all of these bombs were droppred, the Scoobies 2.0 were planning out their now ill-fated attack on the Originals. Their target? Darling Rebekah, of course. Although, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, and Damon quickly becomes Barbie Klaus' target -- or is that "play thing," Rebekah?

To be honest, brutal torture has never looked so good. I mean, Damon was tied up in chains. How could I not be kind of into it? However, she was trying to drain him of his vervain, which would not have been so good if she actually succeeded.

Thankfully, we have Elena to thank for rescuing him -- oh wait, no, that was actually just a dream. As if we can actually believe that Elena would have the ability to rescue anyone. Damon's true savior is once again his brother.

As for Klaus, he was busy getting the family back together for an impromptu reunion. Once Finn realized that his "lady friend" Sage was in Mystic Falls, he quickly changed his masochist tune and started to actually have some fun. Hey, at least he had a tequila shot before getting killed.

We also find out that Klaus has had his baby brother Kol on "Operation Spy on Jeremy," and that's how he used Jeremy's safety to blackmail Bonnie into undoing the binding spell. Thankfully, Bonnie succeed just in time for the Scoobies to take out Finn. That would have been one horrifying diaster.

In between all of the crazy plot twists, one of the true highlights of the episode was the heartfelt conversation between Alaric and Caroline. After discovering that Alaric was the man responsible for her father's death, Caroline forgave him. After all, she too has killed an innocent person, and it's not something that she can easily forget.

This is exactly why I love Caroline. Out of all of the characters on "The Vampire Diaries," I feel like she has shown the most character development. Of course, becoming a vampire and dealing with the loss of her humanity certainly helped move her progression along. The Caroline in Season 1 would not have been able to forgive Alaric for what he did, but now she's able forgive and to understand where Alaric is coming from.

And that's what the show does best. "The Vampire Diaries" -- a series about vampires, werewolves and witches -- is able to transcend the supernatural and focus on the humanity of all its characters. Even Klaus, in his search for family and acceptance, can feel human at times, especially when it comes to his sister Rebekah and his former "best friend" Stefan. Thankfully, we'll get to see more of that later on.

Notable Quotables:

"Slept like a baby, woke up like ... Alaric."
-- Damon, to Elena

"I'm not going to miss because you can't widdle."
-- Stefan, to Damon

"What happens to one, happens to all. You may not feel the affects of the dagger, but you'd lose your precious Rebekah."
-- Finn, to Klaus

"Why do I always have to be Klaus bait?"
-- Caroline, to the Scoobies 2.0

"I'm going to take a page from the Elena Gilbert handbook and believe that you can be saved."
-- Caroline, to Alaric

"You bother me."
-- Bonnie, to Klaus

"You've never had tequila before? That's embarrassing. Seriously, I'm embarrassed for you."
-- Sage

"Nik, he's my play thing, not yours."
-- Rebekah

"I've given your life purpose, as your friend."
-- Klaus

"I wanted a family. They just didn't want me."
-- Klaus

"I'm talking about the fact that you're also in love with Damon."
-- Stefan

"Are you telling me that your vampire-hating alter ego has a stake that can kill an entire line of vampires, possible mine?"
-- Damon

"The Vampire Diaries" airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.

Telenav opens up Scout for Apps, the HTML5 GPS navigation service, to all interested devs

Image
At the end of last year, Telenav revealed its browser-based HTML5 turn-by-turn navigation system and made it available to a select few devs to put it to good use. For an encore, it unveiled its personalized GPS service, Scout, at CES. Now, the company has created Scout for Apps and made the service available to all developers who want it, assuming they're coding iOS or HTML5 applications (Android support is in the works, and is slated to arrive later this year). That means that apps and websites can now incorporate turn-by-turn navigation directly, as opposed to launching a separate application to get you where you want to go. Keep in mind that Telenav isn't pitching this as a full GPS replacement -- more a value added proposition to developers -- and after spending some time using Scout, we can see why.

We tested the browser-based Scout service on our Android handset to run a few errands, and we found it a useful tool, but it certainly pales in comparison to its application counterparts. There's noticeable lag when attempting to swipe around maps, no pinch to zoom (onscreen buttons are the only option), and it lacks features like traffic reports or a way to remember favorite locations. That said, it does do a good job of getting you where you want to go, and the rudimentary nav functionality is certainly more appealing than the static maps found in apps currently. Plus, it's quite nice to not have to launch a separate application to get directions. If you want to test Scout for Apps on your mobile, hit the source link below, but check out the PR and video after the break to learn a little more before you do.

As more autism reported, doctors say check early

CHICAGO (AP) ? At 18 months, Cristina Astacio spoke only a few words, wouldn't respond to her name and shunned other kids in her day care group. Last October, her worried parents found out why.

She has a mild form of autism, a diagnosis being given to more U.S. children than ever before, largely because of more awareness and better diagnosis.

According to new government statistics, the rate is about 1 in 88. That means autism is nearly twice as common as the government reported just five years ago. The largest increases are in Hispanic kids like Cristina.

The definition of autism has changed over the years, and Cristina might not have been considered autistic two decades ago.

But experts say kids like her are lucky in a way, because her parents recognized early that something was wrong. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report issued Thursday found that 40 percent of kids weren't diagnosed until after age 4. Evidence shows that children who are identified early and get help have the best chance for reaching their potential, said CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends autism screening for all children at age 18 months and 2 years.

Diagnosing the developmental disorder relies on observing behavior. Autism can't be cured, but treatment including intensive behavior therapy can help many kids function better.

The academy's Dr. Susan Hyman said many children who aren't making eye contact and aren't talking "may have autism, but they may have other things." She said it's important for parents to be persistent about their concerns with their doctor so their kids can be evaluated.

Kristy Batesole, of Atascadero, Calif., says she suspected something was wrong with her son, Keegan, even when he was a hard-to-calm overly fussy baby. He learned words, but by age 2 stopped talking, would spend hours opening and closing doors and sometimes bang his head on the ground.

Though he started getting special help in preschool in Nevada, he wasn't formally diagnosed with autism until last year, at age 6, after the family moved to California, where there are more autism specialists.

Cristina Astacio gets two hours of behavior therapy six days a week. Her mom, Charisse, says the little girl now responds to commands and speaks about 50 words. The most special are two words Cristina never said before. "Now she says 'mommy' and 'daddy,'" Astacio said. "It's wonderful."

Christina's dad, Christopher, is a special-education teacher in the New York City; most of the kids in his class are Hispanic and many have autism.

"I remember back in the past, a few kids here and there had autism, not like the way it is now," Astacio said. "I'm really curious why so many kids are being diagnosed."

Experts, including CDC researchers, think broader screening and better diagnosis have largely contributed to that. But autism's cause remains a mystery, and government researchers are seeking answers.

The latest numbers are based on 2008 data from 14 states and suggest that autism rates have climbed 23 percent since 2006. Rates are highest in boys and white children. But the biggest rate increase was among Hispanics, from 1 in 270 in 2002 to about 1 in 125 in 2008.

That rate increase also is likely due to better awareness. The CDC report says there's no strong evidence of any racial or ethnic difference in risk factors for autism and that it's likely the condition is underdiagnosed in blacks and Hispanics.

Melissa Miller, a St. Petersburg, Fla., mom whose daughter, Chelsea, was diagnosed last year at age 2, said many people still misunderstand the disorder.

"I think many people hear 'autism' and think 'Rain Man,'" she said, referring to the 1988 movie featuring Dustin Hoffman as the mathematically brilliant but socially impaired autistic savant.

"The autism spectrum is so vast, and all of our children are different. Many of them don't rock back and forth or have savant skills. They are sweet, affectionate, intelligent, goofy ? and exhausting ? kids," Miller said.

Proposed revisions in the manual that doctors use to diagnose mental illness would streamline autism criteria. Critics contend the suggested changes would be too narrow and exclude children who need educational and behavioral services.

Hyman noted that since the manual's last revision, in 1994, much has been learned about autism. "There's a real possibility the new definition will be better for children," she said Thursday at a CDC news conference.

CDC officials say research into causes of autism will help determine if there's been a true increase or just better diagnosis.

Genetics is believed to play a role. Studies have found no connection with childhood vaccines, but other factors under investigation include mothers' illnesses or medication during pregnancy. First results from the CDC study are expected next year.

Geraldine Dawson, chief science officer for the advocacy group Autism Speaks, said the new figures indicate "a public health emergency that demands immediate attention."

Her group estimates that U.S. autism costs total $126 billion each year, including costs related to diagnosis and treatment. That estimate also includes treatment for severely affected adults and lost wages.

Lady Gaga turned 26 years young on Wednesday (March 28), and to help celebrate, MTV News drew up a handy A-to-Z guide touching on some of the most exciting things to come from Mother Monster. Read on and share your birthday wishes for the pop princess!

A: April 27. On that day, Gaga will launch what's sure to be one of the year's most spectacular spectacles at the Olympic Stadium in Seoul, Korea, which brings us to ...

B: ... Born This Way Ball! We were there when Gaga announced the name of the tour in Atlantic City, New Jersey, last year, and it has been hinted that we can expect an "electro pop opera." She had us at "opera."

C: Castle. Mother Monster tweeted an image of the stage design for the tour, and the elaborate gothic castle has us excited.

D: "Dark." Gaga's former creative director, Laurieann Gibson, opened up just last week about why she parted ways with the pop star, telling "ET Canada" that Gaga's ideas "got a little dark for me creatively."

E: Elton John. The godmother to John's adopted son, Gaga has teased a duet with the "Rocket Man" singer for her next album.

F: Fernando Garibay. The musical director behind Born This Way told MTV News that the new album already has a title and concept.

G: Gothic. Veils, brooches and lots of black: Gaga has adopted a gothic theme for her tour, but also in her fashion choices.

H: "Heavy Metal Lover." This jam has been begging for radio play; at the very least, the BTW cut should make it to the tour set list.

I: Inez & Vinoodh. The Dutch photography duo were heavily involved in the spectacle surrounding Gaga's "Yoü and I" video, crafting awesome fashion clips after the official music video.

J: Joanne. Lady Gaga's parents recently opened this Italian trattoria, named for Gaga's late aunt, on New York City's Upper West Side.

K: Kinney, as in Taylor Kinney. The beautiful man who played Gaga's love interest in the "Yoü and I" video is rumored to be her real-life love interest too.

L: Luc Carl. Gaga must still be on good terms with her ex-BF, because she recently tweeted a shout-out to him when he published his new book, "The Drunk Diet."

M: Monster Pit. The special enclosed space within the Born This Way Ball stage where lucky Monsters who line up for hours, even days, before the show will be able to take in the concerts.

N: Nicola Formichetti. The singer's new creative director will be her co-HBIC for the foreseeable future.

O: Oprah. The talk-show queen is Gaga's new BFF, pretty much. She even tapped the OWN network boss to interview her not long after they launched Gaga's anti-bullying-focused Born This Way Foundation together.

P: Piano. One of the best parts of the Monster Ball was when Gaga would slow things down, chatting with the crowd and showing off her raw talent at the piano.

Q: Quinceañera. Gaga's one-word Twitter response to a Little Monster who asked how she would celebrate her 26th birthday this year, never mind that it's the kind of party reserved for 15-year-olds. They grow up so fast.

R: Red Wine. Widely known to be Mother Monster's alcoholic beverage of choice, alongside whiskey and beer.

S: "Stuck on F---in' You." This unreleased and unedited track was leaked by Gaga herself as a Christmas gift to her Little Monsters. She recorded the naughty song on her tour bus last go-round. Can we get another?

T: Tea. Gaga's non-alcoholic beverage of choice, about which she recently tweeted a lesson she learned: #KettlesAreForTeaNotFashion.

U: Unicorns. The mythical creatures may not exist, but Gaga swoons for them, and why not? Fantasy is as important to her as reality.

V: Video Music Awards. Is it too early to begin the campaign for her to blow our minds again at the 2012 VMAs? We'd even settle for Jo Calderone again.

W: Wigs. Her supply is never-ending and will likely continue to fascinate us right on through her 26th year.

X: "Lady Gaga X Terry Richardson." Amazing photo book. Seriously, check it out.

Y: Yuyi. Will the mermaid join Gaga on tour this year? As long as the tour bus is sea-creature-friendly.

Z: Z100 Jingle Ball. In December, Gaga performed a short-but-captivating set at New York City's Madison Square Garden that gave us a peek at what's to come on the Born This Way Ball.

World News - Report: Syria is torturing children, UN human rights ...

Syrian state television broadcast footage of President Bashar-al-Assad making a rare public appearance in the Baba Amr neighborhood of Homs, the heart of the uprising and where his crackdown has been most brutal. ITN's John Ray reports.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

Syrian authorities are detaining and torturing children, the United Nations' human rights chief, Navi Pillay said, according to a report.

"They've gone for the children -- for whatever purposes -- in large numbers," the BBC quoted her as saying. "Hundreds detained and tortured... it's just horrendous.

"Children shot in the knees, held together with adults in really inhumane conditions, denied medical treatment for their injuries, either held as hostages or as sources of information."

Ms Pillay, a?lawyer, said she believed that the UN Security Council had enough reliable information to warrant referring Syria to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

"I feel that investigation and prosecution is a crucial element to deter and call a stop to these violations," she told the BBC.

Ms Pillay said she believed that the UN Security Council had enough reliable information to warrant referring Syria to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Syria accepts Annan peace plan, but clashes continue

Meanwhile, the United States has urged the Syrian opposition to unite and pledge to respect minority rights in a future Syria should President Bashar Assad be driven from power, and warned armed rebels and government forces against committing human rights abuses.

Disunity among the Syrian opposition to Assad has fed fears that Syria could slide into sectarian and ethnic conflict, much as Iraq did after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.

Skeptical of peace plan
This has worried some governments, including the United States which would otherwise be glad to see Assad's downfall, after a year in which Assad has been using the army to crush efforts to end his political dominance in Syria.

Str / AP

Anti-government clashes continue as Western and Arab nations launch a diplomatic offensive to halt the violence.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged the Syrian opposition to lay out a vision of an inclusive Syria in which minority rights are respected.

"They must be able to clearly demonstrate a commitment to including all Syrians and protecting the rights of all Syrians," Clinton told reporters.

"We are going to be pushing them very hard to present such a vision in Istanbul," she said ahead of a gathering of Western and Arab nations in Istanbul on Sunday to discuss a political transition in Syria.

Earlier on Tuesday, the New York Times reported that a meeting of Syrian opposition groups in Istanbul was marred when a veteran dissident and Kurdish delegates walked out, saying their views were not heard.

U.S. Ambassador to Syria Robert Ford said on Tuesday in Washington that he had received reports that armed Syrian opposition groups had engaged in human rights abuses. He said he had warned the rebels, as well as Assad, against committing such abuses.

Both Clinton and Ford were skeptical of reports that Syria's government had accepted the peace plan of U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan.

"Given Assad's history of over-promising and under-delivering, that commitment must now be matched by immediate actions," Clinton said.

Ford left Syria last month because of the violence but remains the U.S. ambassador. At a hearing on Capitol Hill, he was asked about statements by the U.S.-based group Human Rights Watch that armed opposition groups in Syria had committed abuses including kidnapping, detention and torture of security force members and government supporters.

Murad Sezer / Reuters

Syrian National Council President Burhan Ghalioun is greeted by council members during a news conference after their meeting in Istanbul on Tuesday.

"We had reports like that last year, when some of the fighting in Homs became really serious," Ford said. "We raised it even in Syria when my embassy was still open.

"We discussed it with some of the local revolution council representatives -- who are themselves not members of armed groups, but certainly are in contact with them -- and emphasized that they would be held to a standard on this if they wanted support from western countries."

The United States had also raised the matter with the Syrian National Council, the main opposition umbrella group, Ford said.

He added there was a danger that more hard-liners who ignored human rights would gain influence on both sides in Syria the longer the conflict goes on.

Assad's government, Ford said, had committed "massive human rights violations that may amount to crimes against humanity."

The United Nations says more than 9,000 people have been killed in Syria's year-old uprising against Assad. Syria says rebels have killed some 3,000 security force members and blames the violence on "terrorist" gangs.

Human Rights Watch also has accused Assad's forces of human rights abuses, including using human shields in northern Syria in their efforts to crush the rebellion.

Assad on Tuesday was filmed taking a tour of Baba Amr, the district of Homs recently bombarded by his forces.

Cocktail Culture: Crisp tartness, low calories make Kiwi drink extra ...

The bar: Union Asian Gastrolounge, Delray Beach

The vibe: "Lounge" means one thing in nightlife, where it means a sometimes snooty club with some uncomfortable couches, and everywhere else, where it means homey, comfortable and a Snuggie. Union, a creatively pretty club, is the best of both worlds ? stylish but comfortable, chic but not snooty. There?s a DJ and deconstructed ramen, which is like your college ramen?s richer cousin.

The drink: The Kiwi ($12), one of the approximately eleventy-three (OK, 20) signature drinks at Union, is a delicious mixture of fresh kiwi, sake and vodka. The result is crisp, tart and unexpected. And it?s 208 calories, which is especially unexpected. In a good way.

Other noteworthy libations: Oh, where to start? How about the Cotton Candy Tini ($12), the Asian Pear ($12), and the Graham cracker-rimmed S?mores, featuring marshmallow-infused Absolut Vanilla ($13). Of course, there?s a full bar and mojitos and sake and lots of wine. And I haven?t even scratched the cocktail surface.

Bar bites: Try two kinds of edamame, both steamed and spicy Szechuan ($5), the Union "Fried" Rice, actually fresh basmati rice topped with edamame, egg, truffle butter and your choice of meat (or not), which runs $9 to $12, and the Gochujang Lollipop chicken wings ($11).

Deals: One of the best new happy hours in town, Union offers three for one drinks every day from 5 to 7 p.m. Here is how it works: you get two coupons with your first drink, each good for another drink. And if you don?t want all three, just keep your coupons and come back some other time. Also, every menu item is half off.

Info: Union Asian Gastrolounge, 8 E. Atlantic Ave., Delray Beach; (561) 330-4236

The Kiwi

1/4 ounce lemon juice

Making Strides in the Battle against Advanced Colorectal Cancer

Ten years ago, the average life expectancy of an advanced staged colorectal cancer patient was approximately a year. Due to advances in research, the treatment of advanced colorectal cancer has significantly improved the outlook of patients ? more than doubling the average survival.

More important is the shift in patient care towards individualized therapies. Not only do we incorporate new drugs in the management of colorectal cancer, but we incorporate them in a smarter way. The availability of various treatment options has finally allowed us to choose the best course based on the goals of therapy, the characteristics of the tumor and what the patient can tolerate.

A uniform treatment plan for all patients is no longer acceptable. We now know what molecular markers to look for in tumors and how to use that information to select the best treatment options. This ? along with a multidisciplinary approach incorporating medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and surgical oncologists ? has appropriately raised the expectations bar.

Our goal for patients with metastatic disease is no longer just to alleviate symptoms or extend survival but to achieve a cure. Cures for metastatic colon cancer are increasingly seen in patients with disease that has spread to the liver, lungs, lymph nodes, and even in select cases with a solitary bony metastasis. True, curative-intent surgery following chemotherapy in this population is still limited to fewer than 30% of patients with advanced disease. But this is an improvement.

We have gone a long way but a lot more needs to be done. As we continue to experience further improvements in the coming decade through the approval of new targeted drugs and identification of biomarkers of drug sensitivity, a cure is no longer a myth ? it is becoming a reality.

Irina Shayk Thong Photos

Have you seen Irina Shayk and Anne V?s thong pictures? These Russian models know how to spark a crowd and get the paparazzi going! Irina and Anne V are currently in Miami for the annual Jeffrey Fashion Cares fund raiser which benefits the LGBT community and those with AIDS/HIV. The ladies were there with a ton of other gorgeous models including Jessica Gomes, Genevieve Morton, Lindsay Ellingson, Jessica White, Anne V. and Jessica Stam. But no one got the paparazzi going like they did when Irina and Anne hit up the beach in very tiny bikinis. Irina was sporting a leopard thong bikini and looked absolutely amazing. I have to say this though ? I live in Florida and on the Gulf coast. The waster is much warmer here and it is still cold ? so I KNOW these ladies were freezing their butts off in the Atlantic! Floridians don?t get into the water until April/May and that is here on the Gulf coast! In Miami the water is about 70 degrees ? way too cold! Even here on the Gulf it is 78 and we don?t get in, maybe just to dip our feet. Anne V was a bit [...]
