PARIS (AP) ? Candidates for France's presidency are grasping for proposals to ease voter concern about gas prices that have climbed above euro2 per liter ($10.40 per gallon).
Francois Hollande, the Socialist candidate who leads in the polls, says he would freeze gasoline prices and redesign gas taxes.
Conservative President Nicolas Sarkozy, battling to regain popularity, said on Europe-1 radio Wednesday that the idea is a "fable" and that a French leader can't realistically do anything to bring down high world oil prices at the root of the problem.
Far right candidate Marine Le Pen proposed lowering taxes at the pump, and making oil companies such as France's Total SA pay higher taxes.
Jobs and the economy are central to the campaign for presidential elections April 22 and May 6.
