Companies to test new drugs designed to fight many kinds of cancer

For the first time ever, three pharmaceutical companies are poised to test whether new drugs can work against a wide range of cancers independently of where they originated - breast, prostate, liver, lung. The drugs go after an aberration involving a cancer gene fundamental to tumor growth. Many scientists see this as the beginning of a new genetic age in cancer research.
Great uncertainties remain, but such drugs could mean new treatments for rare, neglected cancers, as well as common ones. Merck, Roche and Sanofi are racing to develop their own versions of a drug they hope will restore a mechanism that normally makes badly damaged cells self-destruct and could potentially be used against half of all cancers.
No pharmaceutical company has ever conducted a major clinical trial of a drug in patients who have different kinds of cancer, researchers and federal regulators say.
"This is a taste of the future in cancer drug development," said Dr. Otis Webb Brawley, the chief medical and scientific officer of the American Cancer Society. "I expect the organ from which the cancer came from will be less important in the future and the molecular target more important," he added.
And this has major implications for cancer philanthropy, experts say. Advocacy groups should shift from fundraising for particular cancers to pushing for research aimed at many kinds of cancer at once, Brawley said.
At the heart of this search for new cancer drugs are patients like Joe Bellino, who was a post office clerk until his cancer made him too sick to work.
Seven years ago, he went into the hospital for hernia surgery, only to learn he had liposarcoma, a rare cancer of fat cells. A large tumor was wrapped around a cord that connects the testicles to the abdomen. "I was shocked," he said in an interview this summer.
Companies have long ignored liposarcoma, seeing no market for drugs to treat a cancer that strikes so few. But it is ideal for testing Sanofi's drug because the tumors nearly always have the exact genetic problem the drug was meant to attack - a fusion of two large proteins.
If the drug works, it should bring these raging cancers to a halt. Then Sanofi would test the drug on a broad range of cancers with a similar genetic alteration. But if the drug fails against liposarcoma, Sanofi will reluctantly admit defeat.
"For us, this is a go/no-go situation," said Laurent Debussche, a Sanofi scientist who leads the company's research on the drug.
Health authorities in the United States and Europe worried that the medicines might have unexpected effects.
"Drugs of this type had never been given to a human being," Dr. Gwen Nichols of Roche said. The studies looked only at safety, but Nichols said there were encouraging hints that the drugs might be working. In biopsies and scans, cancer cells appeared to be dying.
Rigorous efficacy studies are next. If they are successful, they will be followed by clinical trials across cancer types.
Recently, Merck began its study to find a safe dose. It is enrolling only patients with acute myelogenous leukemia.
Once the company finds the best dose, it plans to give its drug to just 15 to 30 patients and look for efficacy. And if the drug fails to do its job?
"Then we will not bring the drug forward," Gilliland said.
Sanofi is in much the same position. It just started safety tests in Europe. Medical centers in the United States will be added next year. Like Merck, it will focus solely on patients who are most likely to respond to its own drug - in this case, patients with liposarcoma like Bellino.
Bellino said over the summer that he hoped to be among the first to try a new drug that could combat liposarcoma. When the call goes out for study subjects, he said, "I will be waving my hands."
But the test will come too late for him. He died from his cancer Nov. 13.

P.M. Rajoy says Spain faces tough year ahead
MADRID (AP) ? Spain's prime minister says the country's economy faces a tough year ahead as it grapples with recession, a deep financial crisis and 25 percent unemployment.
In his end-of-year assessment Friday, Mariano Rajoy said the country's crisis had been worse than anticipated, warning that the first half of 2013 will be "very hard" with any recovery not expected until the latter part of the year.
Rajoy added that the government was adjusting the country's deficit "at a time of recession" which was a tough time to try and achieve such a turnaround.
The stinging austerity measures his government had been forced to introduce had been tough, Rajoy admitted, but he added that "without reforms, the country's health and education sectors could not have been maintained."

Oil prices rise ahead of US fiscal-cliff talks
BANGKOK (AP) ? The price of crude rose Friday, following stock markets in Asia higher hours ahead of a last-ditch effort in Washington for political leaders to strike a budget deal before the year-end deadline.
Benchmark crude for February delivery rose 40 cents midday Bangkok time to $91.27 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
The contract fell Thursday following a reported drop in U.S. consumer confidence and growing pessimism that President Barack Obama and Republican lawmakers will reach a compromise on ways to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff ? hundreds of billions of dollars in government spending cuts and tax increases that take effect automatically in 2013 unless lawmakers act.
Hopes that a compromise might be reached were raised after Obama, who cut his Hawaii vacation short, invited congressional leaders to the White House for talks Friday.
In other energy futures trading:
? Wholesale gasoline rose 1.2 cents to $2.8334 a gallon.
? Brent crude, used to price various kinds of foreign oil, rose 48 cents to $111.28 per barrel in London.
? Heating oil rose 0.3 cent to $3.0522 a gallon.
? Natural gas lost 1.3 cents to $3.399 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Your friends bring out different aspects of your personality that are authentically you, and these relationships help keep you from losing yourself in your relationship. 2012 has been quite the year with many events that shaped it. These events ranged from the death of the legendary singer Whitney Houston, Facebook's IPO, the London Olympics (and Gabby Douglas winning the gold medal), the U.S. election (and ultimately the re-election of President Obama), Hurricane Sandy, the release of the iPhone 5 and iPad Mini, the ?end of the world? on 12/21, and now the announcement of the Duke and Duchess?s first child.
It?s been a year of much news and many searches by the public, and of course 2013 will more than likely serve to be a year of similarly interesting and remarkable news and occurrences ? it?s hard to believe that 2013 is literally right around the corner.
For now, using SEMrush?s newly released historical PPC data allows for us to go back in time and look into the specifics of 2012 to see and compare the many events and PPC trends.
Social Media ? Facebook IPO ? facebook.com
On May 18, Facebook hosted an initial public offering, officially taking the company to a public level. Facebook has always been in the news, but in going public created even more of a stir.
Additionally, there has been a great deal more advertising on the website for both business and personal purposes, and Facebook ads are most often purchased by third parties to promote their Facebook product or company page. The PPC over the course of 2012 for Facebook has remained rather unvarying:
However, keyword purchases by these advertisers did change. In November, those utilizing Facebook as a method of promotion are bidding on some interesting keywords such as ?healthy families?, ?cityville?, ?pregnancy test?, ?cereal?, ?mio?, and. In July of this year, ?facebook.com? had some other keywords that came into focus:
While some of them were similar such as ?mio? and ?milky way?, it seems as though Facebook advertising has a very prime focus on keywords that are related to pregnancy and baby names (most of which are leading to the ?Huggies? Facebook page, so they are obviously placing a lot of stock into Facebook for their marketing campaign). In August, once again keywords were similar with additions such as ?pepsi?, ?game?, ?frito lay?, and ?funny videos?, but the advertisers on Facebook are continuously changing.
Sports/World ? the London Olympics ? teamusa.org
The London Olympics were a big part of the year 2012, with USA swimmer Michael Phelps announcing his retirement after the games and Gabby Douglas taking home the gold for USA gymnastics. Currently, teamusa.org is bidding on keywords such as ?Olympics 2012?, ?London Olympics?, ?us soccer?, and ?judo?. However back when the Olympics were taking place, results were a bit different:
In June, ?teamusa.org? was distributing approximately 22 percent of their budget to the keyword ?2012 olympics?, and were also bidding on other keywords such as ?us womens soccer team?, ?usa field hockey?, and even ?shaun white snowboarding?, which is a sport that was understandably not a part of the summer Olympics. Thus, it seems as though ?teamusa.com? was utilizing the summer Olympics to promote other relevant sports, such as USA snowboarding.
Retail - JCPenney ? jcpenney.com
It has been a very interesting year for the well-known retailer JCPenney. Earlier this year, they announced that they would be laying off a good portion of their workforce, and began employing a new pricing method wherein ?everyday? prices would reflect what some would consider to be sale prices.
This change in the store cause consumers to be not quite as satisfied with the way in which JCPenney had decided to manage their pricing and store overall. Since then, they have suffered a great deal of revenue losses, and hence their PPC strategies have also been altered throughout the year in order to deal with the fact:
As the year-long screenshot shows, JCPenney actually began to gradually increase their ads keywords after the announcement of their new sale strategy in February. Since then, it has had steady escalation likely due to the fact that they have to find some way in which to advertise their non-existent sales, and their ads have reached their highest in November with approximately 1.2 million and traffic of 1.2 million. Perhaps their PPC strategy has begun to work, especially during the holidays?
Music/Reality TV ? mtv.com
MTV is an entertainment channel that is watched for many purposes such as for senseless reality shows and music videos. They are constantly coming out with new shows that they will believe to be of interest to their viewers, especially with the conclusion of the infamous program ?Jersey Shore?. Every year new artists and shows arise, and ?mtv.com? has altered their PPC throughout the year in order to promote new programs and artists:
AdWords were extremely sporadic for mtv.com throughout the course of the year, and they have most recently not been putting any funding into AdWords at all, specifically since September. Prior to that, specifically if we look back to July, we are able to view the difference in their bidding habits, which is rather considerable:
Looking at historical data for MTV for July, mtv.com was bidding on the keyword ?mtv? in addition to those such as ?jersey shore? (of course), ?the real world? (is that show even still on?), and ?mtv 16 and pregnant?. Therefore, it?s obvious that MTV has been placing more of an emphasis on their shows rather than music. Interestingly enough, MTV didn?t bid on any keywords in September, which is when the video music awards were held.
Prior to that in August, they were bidding on the keyword ?mtv movie awards? (even though they were held back in June), and ?Rihanna songs?. MTV appears to be experimenting with their PPC habits based upon where their prime focus is at the time.
News ? U.S. Presidential Election ? barackobama.com
Ah, the Presidential election. News of the election was booming for months, up until the final decision was made to re-elect President Obama.
There was much news about the campaigns, the debates, and anything else having to do with the candidates and their personal lives (take a look back at this article?for a brief reminder ? remember searches for ?shirtless romney??) Barack Obama?s website was doing quite a bit of work with their PPC to keep up with the Romney campaign, and the historical data for the website confirms just that:
At the beginning of the year, traffic and AdWords seemed to be relatively stagnant, until of course the election began to get underway. At that point, Obama?s highest Ads Keywords were at 13,289 in August with 112,619 in ads traffic.
After August, these numbers began to drop progressively which may be surprising due to the fact that the election was around the corner, although search engine traffic was at its highest of the year with 524,000 searches.
In November, Ads Keywords dropped down to 0. At the current time, barackobama.com isn?t bidding on any keywords (he won the election already, after all). However looking back a few months such as to August when he had the most PPC, we can see some differing results:
In August, barackobama.com was bidding on expected keywords such as ?obama? (where they were spending the most of their budget), but also were bidding on ?obamacare?, ?immigration reform?, ?the white house?, ?democratic party?, and ?scotusblog?, which is a blog for the Supreme Court of the United States.
Other keywords bid on my Mr. Obama were those of ?chris Christie for president?, ?cost of Iraq war?, ?brock obama? (of course his campaign bid on the misspelling), and even ?el presidente?. The list goes on. But whatever strategy Obama and his campaign team used over the course of this long year, it worked, as Obama is back in office for another four years.
Technology ? iPhone5 ? apple.com
The iPhone 5. There was speculation about Apple?s newest phone for a long time, and it was finally released in September, followed not long after by the long-awaited iPad Mini. Both of these items are hot tickets for the holiday season this year, and trends for 2012 show that apple.com was bidding on the most keywords of 2012 in April with 184,000 and more than 1.2 million in Ads Traffic, and in September (likely for the release of the iPhone5) they were bidding on 100,000 keywords.
Currently, apple.com is bidding on keywords such as ?itunes?, ?apple store?, ?ipad?, and ?iphone 5?. September data shows us the difference between what they were bidding on during the month of the iPhone 5?s release:
During that month, as could have been guessed, apple.com was allocating almost 14 percent of their budget to the keyword ?iphone 5? while also bidding on words such as ?itunes? (which seemingly generated the most traffic of all), ?ipod?, and ?siri?.
Apple is a company that is obviously a household name. If you are without an Apple product, you are most likely considered to be out-of-the-norm.
If you recall from this article, Apple doesn?t quite invest in as much PPC as some other competitors might, and searches increase with the release of new products just as they did before the release of the iPhone5.?Since Apple is already so well-known by society, they don?t have to invest quite as much of their budget into PPC although they do allocate some of it when deemed necessary.
Conclusion
Taking a trip back in time to explore the historical data that is relative to different events in 2012 provides us with a method in which to compare data and coincidentally decipher how and why habits and trends may have changed or stayed the same.
Many factors succeed in determining the way in which Internet marketing tactics are handled throughout the year, but no matter what year it may be, there are always events that are going to change how (and what) the public searches, how they shop, and how retailers and websites act in response to whatever may be occurring in society.
By turning back the clock for a moment and revisiting historical data we can obtain and analyze extremely constructive information, and now it?s on to 2013. So until then: happy searching, happy holidays, and of course a Happy New Year.

15 Heartburn DOs and DONTs | Care2 Healthy Living
Heartburn is a familiar foe. Roughly 50 percent of Americans feel the heat at least once a month; 20 percent suffer from symptoms two or three times a week and have chronic heartburn or GERD (short for gastroesophageal reflux disease). Here are 15 Dos and Don?ts of Heartburn:
Do find out the root cause of your heartburn. Many things stress, food allergies, structural problems with your esophageal sphincter can cause or exacerbate the problem.
Do consider raising the head of your bed. Elevating your noggin keeps the contents of the stomach from sliding up against the LES (the sphincter that separates the esophagus from the stomach) while you sleep. Put a 4-by-4-inch piece of wood under the top two legs of your bed. A foam wedge under the mattress may also work.
Do chew thoroughly. Chewing aids digestion by breaking down food and mixing it with digestive enzymes and probiotics in the mouth.
Do consider natural chewing gum after meals. In two recent randomized controlled studies, people prone to heartburn who chewed a piece or two of gum after a heartburn-provoking meal sidestepped the telltale symptoms. Researchers think it?s because the gum stimulates saliva production, which is alkaline. The saliva goes down the esophagus and helps protect the food tube and neutralize some of the acid in the stomach. (Avoid peppermint-flavored gum, which can actually increase the odds of reflux.)
Do chew a tablet or two of DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice) 15 minutes before a meal, advises Elizabeth Lipski, PhD, clinical nutritionist and author of?Digestive Wellness: Strengthen the Immune System and Prevent Disease Through Healthy Digestion (McGraw-Hill, 2011). Licorice contains substances that decrease swelling (a swollen sphincter won???t close correctly) and increases the body?s ability to heal ulcers and inflammation.
Do eat smaller meals. The greater the volume of your meal, the higher the odds it will give you heartburn simply because of the mechanical pressure the weight of the food puts on the LES.
Do encourage the proliferation of dietary enzymes and good bacteria by eating fermented foods rich in probiotics, such as yogurt, kefir, raw cheeses, sauerkraut, lassi, miso, tempeh and kombucha.
Do take a cue from ancient culinary traditions and build a digestive boost into the meal. Nibble on shavings of pickled ginger, spoon up some tangy Indian chutney or savor an umeboshi plum (a pickled fruit found in the Asian or macrobiotic section of the health-food store). ?Somewhere along the way, Western cuisine lost those built-in digestive aids,?? says Lipski. ?Adding one of these foods to your meal can go a long way to stopping heartburn before it starts.??
Do pay attention to what you consume. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables to keep things moving. When cooking meat, choose to grill, broil or bake instead of pan fry or deep fry. Try goat?s milk dairy products, which contain less fat than cow?s milk and, as a result, are more easily digestible.
Do limit junk food. Processed foods are filled with chemicals designed to delay degradation and extend shelf life, and they may have hidden ingredients that do not agree with your GERD,??? writes Jorge Rodriguez, MD, author of?The Acid Reflux Solution.
Don?t wear your skinny jeans too tight. Constrictive clothing can put pressure on the abdomen. The squeeze can press the stomach?s contents up against the sphincter at the base of the esophagus, which can lead to heartburn.
Don?t eat within two hours before vigorous exercise. Too much vigorous exercise (like jumping rope or fast-paced jogging) can induce acid reflux, even in people who usually don?t suffer from the condition. If you?re at the gym on a full stomach, choose the cycling class over the hip-hop yoga.
Don?t lie down within two to three hours of eating. Gravity is your friend. Give the stomach plenty of time to empty its contents before you get horizontal.
Don?t eat foods that may irritate the inflamed lining of the esophagus, such as citrus juice, tomato juice and spicy foods.
Don?t suck on peppermints to combat the sour taste in your mouth. Peppermint can relax the esophageal sphincter muscle, which could exacerbate your problem.

Miss Sunshine: Don't Lose It All? Can long distance relationships ...
Can a long distance relationship survive? By the way, are long distance relationships realistic? Yes? No? If you think yes, how??? I am curious?
It?s always assumed that relationships are blissful ? but wait! It?s not all candies and kisses, sometimes there a lot of hardship to deal with and it can be really emotionally taunting and mentally demanding. What?s worse is, pairing the idea of a long distance relationship with the sad soppy case of losing communication.
What?s going on? They seemed happy. Although they were going to be far away from each other, they seemed like they were in it forever but then suddenly everything changed! Did he find someone else? Or is it just a simple misunderstanding? Relationships are an uphill battle or sometimes a downwards spiral ? it?s really how you manage it but these two sadly went the wrong way. Who?s that guy at the end? Does he like her? And does she like him too?Most importantly, in the case of Amy & Nick?s relationship, it shows that if there is no data, you?ll lose it all. After all, everything is on the internet now and it costs almost nothing at all.
