New deal keeps jobs in Peterborough: Union chief

Wally Moore, vice-president of Canadian Auto Workers Local 524 had reason to smile Sunday after General Electric workers in Peterborough ratified a new contract.

A three-year deal, it was actually reached at about 9 p.m. Saturday following days of talks in Toronto and averted a potential strike at the Peterborough plant that could have started Monday.

About 600 workers are represented by the union and it held separate ratification votes Sunday at Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School for workers in the plant's large motors (550) and nuclear (50) divisions.

?The vote was about 95% in favour,? said Moore. ?It was a fair deal for everybody. It will keep the company here, which is so important to the community. It could lead to more jobs. There were many issues and they were all addressed. One was in the area of job security, which means we will be here for a long time. It was a long process, starting back last August and we went hard at it the last three weeks. Our group (negotiating committee) did an excellent job.?

Outlined in the collective agreement package was a wage and cost of living allowance of 7.5% over the next three years, including general wage increases of 2% in the first year, 2.5% in the second and 3% in the third.

Also four new steps were added to improve pension benefits, 25 voluntary retirement packages were negotiated and a new vision care package was added to health care benefits, according to Moore.

The first meeting Sunday lasted just about an hour and there were many smiling faces leaving the room to cast a vote.

?It turned out well,? said Moore.
