Former Missouri employee admits to embezzlement | Missouri ...

A 53-year-old woman, who admitted to embezzling money from the Missouri company she was working for, could end up spending up to 30 years in federal prison. In addition to prison time -- without the chance of parole -- she could also end up having to pay restitution on the hundreds of thousands of dollars she embezzled and a $1 million fine.

When looking at what happened, the 53-year-old was working for a heavy highway and general contractor construction company in North Kansas City, Missouri. She worked there as a controller from September 2007 until March 2011.

During her time there, she was the first person to receive any incoming mail. According to the woman, she would get checks from a colleague's office and write them out to herself. Then, she would forge the signatures of the company presidents and go deposit these checks into her personal bank account. When the bank statements would come to the office -- which would have shown the withdrawals -- she simply destroyed them so the company would not find out.

In total, she admitted to embezzling $561,552 by writing out these checks to herself and forging the signatures. Most of this money she supposedly spent on gambling, which could be a sign of a whole other personal problem.

She ended up pleaded guilty to 15 counts of bank fraud before a U.S. District judge. Her sentencing will be scheduled after the United States Probation Office completes its investigation.

This case and the fact that she could end up being in prison until the age of 83, highlights the fact that white collar crimes are taken very seriously and the consequences can be quite severe. This is why it's always a good idea to seek out legal representation as soon as anyone has even an inkling fraud charges are on the horizon.
