Versioning, auto-saving, and full-screen support: Office for Mac 2011 will get the Lion treatment, though not anytime soon. According to a post on the Office for Mac blog, Microsoft is "working hard with Apple" to bring the latest OS enhancements into its Office suite.
Pat Fox, senior director of product management for Office for Mac, addressed what he called the most "common question" from customers: "Yes, we are working hard with Apple to enable versioning, auto save, and full-screen for Office for Mac 2011."
Those are three key features included in Apple's latest operating system, Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, released last week. With full-screen apps and the gesture-based Mission Control, users can swipe from screen to screen, each containing its own application. Auto-save with versioning allows users to browse through past iterations of a file?similar to the company's Time Machine backup solution?and recover a previous version. Maximizing screen real estate and preserving file histories, these features look to be well suited to the productivity suite.
When they may come to Office for Mac, however, remains uncertain at best. "I know your next question will be 'when?,' and unfortunately I can't answer that?but it's likely measured in months not days?just to set expectations," Fox wrote.
Apple's own productivity suite, iLife, has already been updated for Lion; Pages, Numbers, and Keynote now support full-screen mode, auto-resume (where the application picks up where the user last left off), auto-save, and versioning.
The news of the pending enhancements arrived alongside an update to Communicator for Mac, which addressed a Lion-specific issue that caused the application to crash when users sent instant messages or initiated audio or visual calls. With the Communicator fix, there's one outstanding issue with Office for Mac in Lion?Outlook cannot import mail from Apple Mail?that the company is said to be reviewing.
