Russian tycoon Abramovich wins London court battle

LONDON (AP) ? Self-exiled tycoon Boris Berezovsky lost his multibillion-dollar legal battle against fellow Russian mogul Roman Abramovich on Friday after a British judge ruled that he didn't tell the truth in the clash over vast oil wealth.

The case in London's High Court sparked broad interest because of its focus on the two oligarchs' personal and business relationship in the chaotic days of post-Soviet Russia. The months of testimony included juicy details about their rise to riches, their jet-set lifestyles on yachts and in luxury hotels, and allegations of "gangster" behavior.

The 64-year-old Berezovsky, a former Kremlin power broker who fell out with Russian President Vladimir Putin, alleged that Abramovich had betrayed and intimidated him into selling his oil stakes vastly beneath their true value, and sold his gas shares without his consent. Berezovsky had sought more than $5.6 billion in damages.

Abramovich had denied all the charges.

On Friday, Judge Elizabeth Gloster scathingly dismissed Berezovsky's case, calling him "an unimpressive, and inherently unreliable, witness, who regarded truth as a transitory, flexible concept, which could be molded to suit his current purposes."

"I regret to say that the bottom line of my analysis of Mr. Berezovsky's credibility is that he would have said almost anything to support his case," Gloster said in a 38-page summary of her judgment.

In contrast, she found the 45-year-old Abramovich, the owner of Chelsea football club, to be "a truthful, and on the whole reliable, witness."

Berezovsky, who had alleged blackmail and breach of contract, shook his head in court Friday as his defeat became clear. Abramovich did not attend.

Outside the court, Berezovsky accused Gloster of rewriting Russian history.

"I am absolutely amazed by what happened today," he told reporters. "Sometimes I have the impression that Putin himself wrote this judgment."

A statement issued by Abramovich's representatives said he was "pleased and grateful" that his position had been "comprehensively vindicated by the court."

In Moscow, Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed satisfaction with the decision. "It's always pleasant when slander is called by its own name," he was quoted as saying by the state news agency RIA Novosti.

A mathematician-turned-Mercedes dealer, Berezovsky amassed his wealth during Russia's chaotic privatization of state assets in the early 1990s. In return for backing former Russian President Boris Yeltsin, he gained political clout and opportunities to buy state assets at knockdown prices.

Berezovsky said he mentored Abramovich, treating him like a son, and founded the oil giant Sibneft with him and a third partner. Berezovsky claimed that the friendship faltered when he fell out with Putin, at which point Abramovich "intimidated" him into selling $1.3 billion of his Sibneft shares, which he claimed were really worth almost $6 billion.

Abramovich contradicted that account, saying Berezovsky never had "a cent" of investment in Sibneft. He said he had paid more than $2.5 billion to Berezovsky for his services as his "political godfather" and reluctantly funded Berezovsky's extravagant lifestyle of yachts and vacation homes because he feared retaliation from Berezovsky, who he alleged had connections to gangsters in Chechnya.

The judge concluded that the deal between the two men was that in return for substantial cash payments, Abramovich and Sibneft would enjoy Berezovsky's political patronage and influence, "which was indispensable to the construction of any major business in the conditions of the 1990s."

The judge rejected Berezovksy's claims that he was threatened by Putin and Alexander Voloshin, a Putin ally, to coerce him to sell his Sibneft stake.

She also rejected Berezovsky's claim that he had an agreement which gave him an interest in any aluminum holdings that Abramovich might acquire after 1999. There was never any agreement that entitled Berezovsky to shares in the aluminum company Rusal, she added.

The case hinged on four alleged oral agreements and almost every aspect of those alleged deals was in dispute, the judge said.

"Significantly there were no contemporaneous notes, memoranda or other documents recording the making of these alleged agreements or referring to their terms," the judge said.

The burden fell on Berezovsky to convince the court that the agreements had been made, "not for Mr. Abramovich to convince the court otherwise," the judge said.

Gloster was scathing about Berezovsky's credibility.

"At times the evidence which he gave was deliberately dishonest; sometimes he was clearly making his evidence up as he went along in response to the perceived difficulty in answering the questions in a manner consistent with his case; at other times, I gained the impression that he was not necessarily being deliberately dishonest, but had deluded himself into believing his own version of events," she said.

The case may have fascinated the British media, but many in Russia appeared cynical.

"The super-rich are not popular in Russia. An overwhelming majority of Russians see their wealth as ill-gotten gains, see them as people who enriched themselves at people's expense," said Masha Lipman, an analyst at the Carnegie Moscow Center.

Berezovsky, who has lived in Britain since he fled Russia in 2001, said he hadn't decided whether to appeal. He declined to comment on the financial implications of losing the case.

"Life is life," he said. "Now I know what means English court better than before."

Obama Praises Romney for His Faith

Policy differences aside, President Obama says he admires Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney for his family life, personal discipline and outward practice of his Mormon faith.

"He strikes me as somebody who is very disciplined. And I think that that is a quality that obviously contributed to his success as a private equity guy," Obama said in an interview with TIME magazine ahead of the Democratic National Convention next week.

"I think he takes his faith very seriously. And as somebody who takes my Christian faith seriously, I appreciate that he seems to walk the walk and not just be talking the talk when it comes to his participation in his church," he said.

The personal praise for Romney - and rare mention of his religious practice - goes beyond what Obama has publicly offered heretofore on the campaign trail. He regularly refers to his rival as a patriotic family man, even though he vehemently disagrees with his policies.

"This isn't a matter of who is more patriotic or who is more empathetic towards people or who is nicer," Obama said later in the TIME interview. "It's a hard-headed assessment of what makes our economy grow. And the facts are on my side in this argument. The question is whether while we're still digging ourselves out of this hole that we found ourselves in, that the facts will win the day."

The Obama campaign has said it would not make an issue of Romney's Mormonism during the lead up to the November election - a pledge which it so far has appeared to keep.

"We've said that's not fair game," senior Obama strategist David Axelrod said of both candidates' personal religious views in an interview with CNN earlier this year.

Bendy battery lets you wear gadgets' power supply

BATTERIES are going round the bend. A flexible, lithium-ion battery can fit inside the cable for your earphones so you can wear it round your neck.

Developed by a team at Pusan National University in South Korea, the battery is made from electrode strands coiled into a hollow core and surrounded by an outer electrode tube. It could make future gadgets lighter because they will no longer need an integrated battery. Flexible displays or wearable electronics will be less bulky too. It might mean you can wear your power source on the wrist, round your neck or any another part of the body, its creators say.

In tests, a prototype continuously operated a red LED screen and iPod Shuffle even when researchers tied the battery in a knot. Je Young Kim of Korean firm LG Chem and a co-creator of the device, says the battery can power a small MP3 player for up to 10 hours and provide 5 minutes of emergency calls from a cellphone (Journal of Advanced Materials, doi.org/fz5rg5).

The team's goal is to have the battery ready for mass production by 2017, for use in MP3 players or as emergency back-up power for cellphones. "This may be the first cornerstone of the wearable energy era," says Kim.

These modifications might either be the renovation or replacement of existing elements like windows, roof coverings, sidings, and nearby landscapes. Different spaces in the house might also be redesigned or constructed, such as bedrooms, washrooms, and kitchens. Additional projects may consist of swimming pool, patio area, outside kitchen, or fence and deck makeover or construction.

Nevertheless, all these modifications require the required monetary resources or they may simply add up to your disappointments each time you return home. On the other hand, you do not need to make these changes all at once? you could concentrate on one task at a time, beginning with the home improvement project that can supply you with the most feasible perks. For those wanting to provide their residence a remarkable makeover, pools, patios, and decks can be redesigned or added to the home.

In many states in New England, such as Maryland, where cool weather conditions normally reign, a deck can be a positive addition to the house framework. Decks Maryland residents like are those constructed from wood or composite wood? the latter patronized for being long lasting and inexpensive. On the other hand, these materials require some maintenance; wood decks commonly have to be sealed, which will certainly safeguard their durability and integrity for a number of years.

While a deck might offer that remarkable result, a Maryland roofing expert can also conduct improvements on your roof covering to provide it the essential curb appeal, which will raise your property's worth. By employing a qualified contractor supported by trustworthy suppliers and highly experienced installation employees, you can not fail in your choice of roofing materials. A new deck and a new roof can make your residence stick out in the neighborhood.

"Real-life Tricorder" To Be Tested On International Space Station

Let's face it, everything revealed within Star Trek (or most Sci-Fi for that fact) will eventually come to pass

Most, or at least much of it already has. When Star Trek came out in 1966 there were no cell phones (communicators), flat screen computers, voice activated computers, self-opening doors, medical readouts, space shuttles... and in some cases we've already bypassed Star Trek's tech. In The Wrath of Khan, McCoy gave Kirk a pair of reading glasses. In 2003 the FDA approved the CrystaLens, an implant th

Hands on with the Samsung Galaxy Camera

We're live in Berlin at the Samsung Unpacked event where the Samsung Galaxy Camera has just been unveiled. We've had a little hands-on time with the new Galaxy Camera, and the first thing that strikes is that this is a capable, high-quality point-and-shoot. The device feels extremely solid and well built, and the 4.8-inch HD SuperAMOLED display is of similar quality to the S3's.

We shouldn't forget that this is a camera powered by Android, and not an out and out Android device. Samsung has put their latest version of the Touchwiz Nature UX on there, based on Android 4.1. Yes, that's right, this is a camera running Jelly Bean. The possibilities with a connected camera are pretty exciting, and we're seeing the start of a whole new category of devices.

Of course, image quality remains to be seen. However, with a 16-megapixel sensor and 20X optical zoom, Samsung looks to have created a compelling alternative to smartphone cameras for those looking to graduate from the world of smartphone photography.

Check out our hands on video with the Galaxy Camera above, and remember to keep it locked to AC throughout the week for more on this and everything else from IFA 2012 in Berlin.

Kenya PM calls for country to unite after deadly riots

Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Wednesday called for the nation to come together to stop religious violence, after two days of deadly rioting sparked by the killing of a radical cleric.

"We are not going to allow outside forces to incite Kenyans to create religious war," Odinga said after flying to the port city of Mombasa, where four people died in street battles that broke out on Monday.

Police said Wednesday that they had restored calm to the town, after hundreds of angry youths fought running battles with police -- looting churches, torching cars and attacking a police truck with a grenade -- following the assassination of preacher Aboud Rogo Mohammed.

The cleric -- popularly known as Rogo -- was on US and UN sanctions lists for allegedly supporting neighbouring Somalia's Al-Qaeda-linked Shebab militants.

Police said two officers wounded in the grenade attack Tuesday had died overnight, taking the toll of those killed in the blast to three.

Over a dozen other officers were wounded in the attack. One person was also hacked to death in the riots on Monday, while several civilians were wounded.

"We have many political enemies but we want to see coexistence among all the communities living in Mombasa," Odinga said, after meeting with religious leaders from the majority-Muslim region, which also has a significant Christian population.

Rogo had fiercely opposed Kenya's invasion of southern Somalia last year to attack Shebab bases. The US and UN had accused him of recruiting and fundraising for the extremist insurgents.

Police said Wednesday that they had restored control to Mombasa -- a key port for the wider east Africa region and a major tourist hub -- although tensions remained high.

"We do not have any problems... we have made adequate deployment for street patrols to maintain peace," regional police chief Aggrey Adoli said.

At least 24 people were charged with offenses linked to the riots on Wednesday, with more suspects likely to be charged in coming days, Adoli said.

An AFP reporter said police were conducting house-to-house searches looking for suspects, as well as for guns and other weapons.

Foreign embassies -- including those of Australia, Britain, France and the United States -- have issued travel warnings for Mombasa, where several large tourist resorts are based.

Rogo was killed Monday in Mombasa when unidentified gunmen opened fire on his vehicle as he was driving with his wife and children, leaving it riddled with bullets.

Images released by his supporters showed his bloody corpse slumped behind the wheel. His wife and children reportedly survived the attack.

Human Rights Watch has called for a probe into the killing, noting it "follows the abductions and deaths earlier this year of several other people charged with recruitment and other offences related to the Shebab."

Rogo's supporters accused the security forces of murdering him, calling his death an "extra-judicial killing". The police reject the claim and have appealed for help in hunting down those responsible.

The Supreme Council of Muslims in Kenya condemned both the killing of Rogo and the subsequent violence, especially the targeting of churches.

However, Somalia's extremist Shebab called on Kenyan Muslims to "take all necessary measures" to defend their religion.

"Muslims must take the matter into their own hands, stand united against the kuffar (non-Muslims) and take all necessary measures to protect their religion, their honour, their property and their lives from the enemies of Islam," the group said in a statement on Tuesday.

Munich, Germany August 28 2012: The risk of ischemic stroke one year after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) dropped by 21% over a ten year period, according to research presented at ESC Congress 2012. The analysis of data from two Swedish registries was presented by Dr Anders Ulvenstam, and suggests that the reduction is due to improvements in AMI care.

Ischemic stroke is a well known, relatively rare but potentially devastating complication following myocardial infarction. It can lead to severe neurological handicap and death for the patient and it is associated with great costs for society.

"The risk of ischemic stroke after myocardial infarction has been studied previously, but there are many questions that remain unanswered," said Dr Ulvenstam. "Many studies have been conducted within clinical trials but these trials tend to focus on a particular patient group. Few, if any, studies have been done on the broader group of patients seen in day to day clinical practice. We based our analysis on two registries which include all AMI patients in Sweden."

"Great variation in the incidence of ischemic stroke after AMI has been found in previous studies, which tells us that we do not have a realistic estimate of the risk of suffering from ischemic stroke after myocardial infarction," he added.

"Furthermore, many of the earlier studies were done before modern AMI care - with different drugs and interventional procedures- was established, which is why we do not know how this has affected the risk over time. There is also conflicting data regarding independent predictors of stroke risk."

The study presented at ESC Congress 2012 was based on 173,233 Swedish AMI patients between 1998-2008, from the Register of Information and Knowledge about Swedish Heart Intensive Care Admissions (RIKS-HIA). In order to identify which of these AMI patients suffered an ischemic stroke within one year, the RIKS-HIA database was merged with the Swedish National Registry, which contains diagnoses for all patients at discharge from hospital care.

Dr Ulvenstam said: "Based on this patient information we were able to answer the questions raised above, regarding the incidence, time trends and independent predictors of ischemic stroke at one year after AMI."

The researchers found that during 1998-2008 the average risk of ischemic stroke one year after AMI was 4.1%. This was nearly twice as high as the incidence found in an important meta-analysis performed by Witt et al. in 2006 which showed an average risk of 2.1% (1). Dr Ulvenstam said: "The higher incidence in our study could be explained by the fact that we have such an unselected patient group. The registries used exclude very few AMI patients which means that there are more potential stroke victims."

A second finding from the study was that the risk of ischemic stroke one year after AMI fell by 21% over a ten year period, from 4.7% in 1998-2000 to 3.8% in 2007-2008. "We are the first to show that the risk of suffering from stroke after AMI seems to be diminishing," said Dr Ulvenstam. "This is probably a direct result of the great improvement in AMI care which has taken place during the last two decades. For the first time we can see the impact of different drugs and interventional procedures on stroke risk after AMI."

The researchers also conducted an analysis of independent predictors of stroke risk. Multiple regression analysis showed for the first time that each of the following factors independently reduced stroke risk: reperfusion therapy with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), blood clot dissolving therapy (fibrinolysis), thrombocyte aggregation inhibitors (aspirin and P2Y12-inhibitors) and statins. Dr Ulvenstam said: "The finding that PCI actually reduces stroke risk is somewhat surprising, being an invasive procedure. It has traditionally been associated with an increased stroke risk. We speculate that early reperfusion of the myocardium reduces infarction size and thereby leads to a reduced burden of atrial fibrillation and heart failure and in turn, reduced stroke risk."

He concluded: "The risk of stroke after myocardial infarction is higher than previously thought, but seems to be decreasing with the modernization of coronary care. We predict that this risk will continue to decline if clinicians treat their AMI patients with the recommended drugs and interventions."

RNC chairman on Chris Matthews attack: ?If more than 10 people actually watched his show I?d actually care?

TAMPA, Fla. ? During a heated television appearance Monday,?Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus responded to verbal attacks MSNBC host Chris Matthews has launched at him,?and dismissed the left-leaning host?s relevance in the political world.

?If more than 10 people actually watched his show I?d actually care,? Priebus told a gaggle of reporters Monday. ?But they don?t. So whatever.?

Matthews slammed Priebus when both men appeared on MSNBC?s ?Morning Joe? show, accusing the Republican Party and its presidential nominee Mitt Romney of playing the race card and calling Priebus??views ?insane.? He also excoriated Priebus for his insistence that President Obama is ?looking to Europe for guidance.?

?You are playing that little ethnic card there,? Matthews told Priebus.??You can play your games and giggle about it, but the fact is your side is playing that card.?

Speaking to reporters gathered at the Republican National Convention, Priebus said of the ?Hardball? host: ?When someone wants take the prize [for] being the biggest jerk in the room, he made the case for us.?

He dismissed the importance of the televised segment during which Matthews had attacked him, and said he would still happy to appear on MSNBC.

?Sure. I mean I?m happy to go on MSNBC. I tell you what, Joe and Mika, they weren?t too happy about it,? he said about the ?Morning Joe? hosts. ?The feeling in the room was clearly that there was a lot of unhappiness directed towards Chris.?

Military punishes 6 soldiers for Quran burning

?

By Jim Miklaszewski and Courtney Kube, NBC News

Updated at 6:54 p.m. ET: WASHINGTON - The U.S. military on Monday dealt out punishment to six Army soldiers for burning Qurans at Bagram Air Base that ignited deadly protest in Afghanistan, and to three Marines for their roles in urinating on Taliban corpses.

?

Watch World News videos on NBCNews.com?

The Army handed out administrative discipline to four officers and two non-commissioned officers for the Quran burning but?found no ill intent on the part of the soldiers so none will face criminal charges. ?

The administrative punishment, however, will likely result in the end of their military careers.

The investigation against one sailor was dropped when it was determined he was simply ordered to drive the truck with the material to the burn site at the base.

The burning of the Muslim holy books in February sparked weeks of protests that led to 30 Afghan deaths. U.S. officials said at the time the books were mistakenly sent along with garbage for disposal after detainees had written messages in them.

The investigation found up to 100 Qurans and other religious materials were burned in the incinerator at Bagram Air Field on Feb. 20.?

An Army report released on the incident Monday shed new light on what happened that day.

Report: 5 soldiers involved in Quran burning

Members of the Military Police and Theater Intelligence Team had discovered that Bagram detainees were using library books to pass notes and messages. One?interpreter determined that 60 percent to 75 percent of the books contained extremist content. So, soldiers were ordered to remove the books as contraband. In all, about 2,000 books, including Qurans and other religious material, were set to be destroyed.?

An Afghan National Army soldier and and interpreter warned the troops not to dispose of the religious texts, but soldiers took some 100 books to the burn pit anyway.

A local man who worked at the burn pit discovered the Qurans and other texts were burning. He grabbed a front-end loader and doused the entire burn pit to extinguish the flames.

An?angry crowd of Afghans gathered around the U.S. service members who drove the truck to the burn pit and were burning the material. The U.S. soldiers all fled.

"I absolutely reject any suggestion that those involved acted with any malicious intent to disrespect the Quran or defame the faith of Islam," an investigator wrote. "Ultimately, this was a tragic incident (that) resulted from a lack of cross-talk between leaders and commanders, a lack of senior involvement in giving clear guidance in a complex operation? and??distrust among our service members and our partners.? ?

Hoshang Hashimi / AP

More than ten years after the beginning of the war, Afghanistan faces external pressure to reform as well as ongoing internal conflicts.

In the other case, a statement from the Marine Corps said the three Marines received the punishment for "violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice for their role in the desecration and filming of deceased Taliban that became public in January 2012."

As part of a plea deal, three Marines pleaded guilty and will receive a permanent mark on their records that will impact any future promotions and re-enlistments.

Six more Marines are still awaiting their punishments in the urination incident, which was recorded on video. It was announced, however, that two officers will be charged with creating a command climate that led to acts of bad behavior, the Marine Corps said.?It was unclear what disciplinary action the four other non-commissioned officers will face.

The three Marines were all members of the Third Battalion, Second Marine Regiment or in units that were attached to the "3/2" during their deployment. Their names were not released.?

One non-commissioned officer pleaded guilty to having violated a general order by?wrongfully posing for an unofficial photograph with human casualties and urinating on the body of a deceased Taliban soldier, which conduct was prejudicial to good order and discipline.

Another non-commissioned officer pleaded guilty to?wrongfully posing for an unofficial photograph with human casualties and?wrongfully video recording the incident.?

A staff non-commissioned officer pleaded guilty to?failing to report the mistreatment of human casualties by other Marines and?making a false official statement to a Naval Criminal Investigative Service investigator about the his knowledge of the video.

The incident took place during a counter-insurgency operation near Sandala, Musa Qala District in Helmand Province, Afghanistan around July 27, 2011.?

According to The Wall Street Journal, officials in Afghanistan were bracing for public demonstrations over what might be viewed as lenient punishment of the troops.

Conventions a parody playground for 'Daily Show'

NEW YORK (AP) ? For "The Daily Show" correspondents, the national conventions are a veritable playground, teeming as much with targets for satire as they are with banner-waving delegates.

As it has in recent election years, the Comedy Central show is decamping for both the Republican and Democratic national conventions to broadcast a week of shows at each that will ? in as close to real-time as "The Daily Show" gets ? parody the nation's most extravagant political pageants.

"I cannot overstate just how many balloons are at these things," says a wide-eyed John Oliver, the British comedian who's been a "Daily Show" correspondent since 2006 and "covered" the 2008 conventions.

Whereas "The Daily Show" typically operates from its New York studio, sifting through TV footage for the gaffs, contradictions and inaccuracies of politicians and the media, the show is in the eye of the storm at the conventions.

"It's not easy when you're in the middle of it and there's nothing but goodwill swarming all around you and there's a moving sensation in the air, when you have to be the person going, 'This is slightly ridiculous,'" says Oliver. "People do tend to look at you and go, 'Really? You have to ruin this?' Not ruin it, provide another perspective on it."

"The Daily Show," which will shift its regular schedule a day to broadcast four shows from Tampa, Fla., on Tuesday through Friday, has been covering conventions on-site since 2000. The coverage is usually remarkable for the sense of correspondents running amok, like Stephen Colbert dancing and lip-syncing through the throngs on the floor of the 2004 DNC.

Oliver was so moved by Barack Obama's acceptance speech in 2008 that he crawled on his knees to drink in "the most delicious hope I've ever tasted." In a moment of exuberance, he attempted to kiss a woman. (She demurred.)

At the 2008 RNC, Samantha Bee filed a memorable report where she desperately tried to get attendees to use the word "choice," which many went to verbal acrobatics to avoid, lest Bristol Palin's pregnancy be linked to pro-abortion rights.

"It's always really interesting to me to make note of the things that people will and won't say at the convention," says Bee. "Everyone's receiving the same sort of messaging from day one. When a message reverberates through a whole stadium filled with people, it's amazing to witness."

Though the conventions represent the essential step of a party officially nominating a candidate for the presidency, they function mainly as carefully orchestrated frenzies to inspire voters. Political discourse can be in short supply.

"It's amazing how for campaigns that have so little substance, just how spectacularly they are able to present that nothing," says Oliver. "I think they're ludicrous but I think that's probably objectively true. I think if any American splashed water on their face or was unconscious for 40 years and came back, they'd go: 'What are we doing? And how much does this cost? How many balloons are up there?'"

"The Daily Show" has dubbed its coverage "RNC 2012: The Road to Jeb Bush 2016." Executive producer Rory Albanese says the name isn't meant to suggest Mitt Romney will lose in November but that the Republican Party appears more excited about the possible future candidates that it will feature in Tampa, like Bush and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

"The joke of our convention coverage is the feeling the Republicans have: 'We're not really exciting about this guy, but you know who we are excited about? This other guy, who you'll see in four years,'" says Albanese. "As far as who is going to win the election, you'd have to be CNN to call it this early."

The difficulty of the task, Albanese says, isn't being funny. After all, the show has a stable of funny people including host Jon Stewart and the other correspondents: Aasif Mandvi, Jason Jones, Al Madrigal and Jessica Williams. The hard part is processing the information rapidly, so that the comedy is predicated on actual themes and currents.

For the DNC, which will take place Sept. 4-6 in Charlotte, N.C., Albanese believes a topic will be the lack of message, summing up the campaign as "Hey, those guys are crazier, right?"

Bee describes the improvising nature of the work as "fishing all day," while keeping broad themes in mind. Though one might suspect the correspondents have a harder time interviewing people at the RNC than the DNC, she says the opposite is true. They're more recognizable to liberals.

"It's a little like a 'Star Trek' convention for us," says Bee of the DNC. "It's actually easier to talk to people at the RNC even if they know us because they actually don't care about us. They have a little bit more swagger to be perfectly honest."

Oliver has one reason to prefer the RNC: It's where he met his wife. Four years ago, he, along with a cameraman and producer, were fleeing security when a group of army veterans helped them hide. Last year, Oliver married one of those veterans, Kate Norley.

"I did not go into these conventions thinking I was going to meet my wife," says Oliver. "I didn't even go in thinking I was going to have a pleasant time, and I got a wife out of it."

Christian archbishop, priests flee Syria violence

Rebels in Syria claim new video shows their forces shooting down an Army helicopter as it was bombarding a Damascus neighborhood. TODAY's Natalie Morales reports.

By NBC News staff and wire services

The United States called reports of execution-style slayings by Syrian government forces "brutal" and a?Christian archbishop fled Syria with several priests after their offices were ransacked, news services reported on Monday.

U.S. State?Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said that of more than 300 people killed some 150 had been killed in a single location around the Syrian capital Damascus. She cited reports from human rights activists that some were killed point-blank "in the most brutal way at the hands of the regime."?

Syrian opposition activists say as many as 600 people, including women and children, were killed by government forces in the Damascus suburb of Daraya.

Also on Monday, fighter planes fired two rockets at targets on the eastern edge of Damascus, opposition activists said, the same day a military helicopter was apparently shot down by rebels.

It was the first time a warplane has struck areas close to the capital, an activist source told Reuters.

Video taken by activists showed a fighter plane swooping in on a built-up area. An explosion is heard and a voice says: "It is firing rockets."

320 found killed in Syria; rebels blame Assad?

Abu Qais, a Sunni Muslim in the Syrian capital, told The Associated Press that six members of his extended family have been killed by gunmen who belong to the minority Alawite sect of President Bashar Assad. The gunmen who grabbed one of his distant cousins called up his family while they were torturing him "so they could hear his screams," said Abu Qais, an anti-Assad activist who spoke on condition his full name not be used for fear of reprisals.

Sectarian slayings between Syria's Sunni majority and the Alawite minority have been a grim reality of Syria's 17-month-old conflict, and they have only accelerated as the country falls into outright civil war. Sunnis have largely backed the uprising against Assad's rule, while the Alawites ? members of an offshoot of Shiism ? have firmly stood behind the regime, where they fill the leadership ranks.

?

The number of people fleeing the fighting in Syria continues to rise with more than 200,000 leaving for neighboring countries because of continuing violence. Government forces continue to shell Aleppo and other suburbs of Damascus. Jonathan Miller Channel 4 Europe reports.

And as tit-for-tat killings have swelled, so has the segregation of the two communities as they flee each other. In Damascus and other cities, Sunnis and Alawites avoid venturing into each other's neighborhoods for fear of being snatched. Some Alawite districts in the capital are now ringed with checkpoints manned not only by security forces but also residents who have taken up arms to protect their homes.

Watch World News videos on NBCNews.com?

Those in mixed neighborhoods flee their homes to move into safer enclaves dominated by their community ? whether in the same city or in another part of the country.

"Mutual threats in Damascus have succeeded in triggering migration," said Fateh Jamous, an Alawite activist from Latakia, the Mediterranean coastal city where many Alawites have fled. Latakia itself has so far represented a sort of tense neutral ground ? its population is about half Sunni, half Alawite. "That created a sort of balance of terror. So far, it has been generally peaceful," he said by telephone from Latakia.

Christians, too, are being caught up in the sectarian strife. The Catholic news agency Fides reported that the Melchite Greek Catholic archbishop of Aleppo, Jean-Clement Jeanbart, and a number of priests fled to Lebanon after their offices in Aleppo were ransacked

The Melchite Greek Catholic Church is a community of Middle Eastern Christians who are in full communion with Rome.

Fides said "unidentified groups who want to feed a religious war and drag the Syrian population into sectarian conflicts" attacked the Christian area in the old quarter of Aleppo.

A Byzantine Christian museum and an office of the Maronite Christian faith were also damaged, the report said.

There are several Christian groups in Syria, many of which have been in the region since pre-Islamic times.

Christians make up around 10 percent of the population and many have remained loyal to Assad, fearing that the majority Sunni Muslims would trample on religious rights if they took power.

However, some senior members of the opposition are also Christians.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

?Ninety percent of the secret to being married is the commitment to ...

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dana-adam-shapiro/ruby_b_1766393.html

This article is an excerpt from a book about marriage. ?It tells the story of how an affair happened before the person involved got a divorce.

While that is undoubtedly a sad thing, it does happen. ?Often. ?The writer of the excerpt also talks about what she realized about herself in how she handled her relationship and some of the general principles for having a better relationship which I?d like to share with you.

My stepmom had all these great lines about marriage that I thought were completely ludicrous when I first heard them, but the longer I was married, I felt they were really right-on. One was: ?You can be right or you can be married.? Or: ?Marriage isn?t a 50/50 compromise ? it?s a?hundred?percent compromise. Neither person totally gets what they want.?

I?m sorry if that sounds cynical but people who think that?love conquers all, I just wonder if they?ve ever been married. Ninety percent of the secret to being married is the commitment to the?process?of being married. Whatever comes your way ? problems with sex, problems with money, whatever ? it?s essential that you?re both committed to working out a solution where both people are represented, where the well-being of the other person is just as ? if not?more?important ? than your own. It?s an easy thing to say ideologically, but it?s really, really hard to do, especially the younger you are.

Two points: ?the secret to being married is not the commitment to the marriage or the other person, but to the?process of growth that is marriage. ?Critical to that is the realization that it is 100% compromise: ?YOU WILL NOT GET EVERYTHING YOU WANT. ?The giving in marriage, however, leads to growth in yourself. ?Being able to see beyond your wants to see your needs and how you need to work that out and seek the support of your partner in seeking that is the key.

I like to say that marriage is not about compromise. ?It is about complementing. ?Not complimenting, but giving of oneself to the other person in a reciprocal way to help each other deal with their own needs by giving of your strengths. ?As a result of this, you learn more about yourself and your capacity to give.

So what if you give too much? ?That is the natural rub of doing this. ?The way out of this is to answer these questions in order:

1) ?Who am I?

What am I about? ?What is important to me in life? ?In being in relationship, you start from this point, not from the perspective of your partner. ?This is what you need to communicate with yourself and with your partner.

An activity to get in touch with this is to take a piece of paper and fill it with a list of good and bad qualities about yourself. ?I mean FILL it. ?Use as much space as you can.

2) What do I want?

What do I want in my life? ?What are the important things in my life for me, not for those in my life who want to tell me what I want? ?What interests me? ?What disinterests me?

An activity to get in touch with this is to go on a self-date. ?Dress up nice, look in the mirror, and ask yourself out. ?Out loud. ?With feeling. ?Go do something alone that you would do on a date. ?Don?t invite others, either in person or mentally. ?When you are alone in a public place, feeling alone, remind yourself that you are not alone, but that you are with yourself, the person you are going to spend the most time with during your life. ?Don?t mentally invite others with you?that would be like dating someone who does nothing but talks about his/her exes. ?Not fun. ?Use the self-date as a way to explore who you are and what you want to do.

3) ?Who do I want?

You should first want yourself as you really are, warts and all. ?If you don?t, you aren?t ready for this step yet. ?The question, although phrased this way, is not about the particular person you want, whether it be Dick or Jane. ?It is about the kind of person you are ready to love and be with. ?This does not mean that if your partner does not have these qualities that you should dump them. ?It means that in the grand scheme of things, after knowing what you want and need, that you are able to discern if you are comfortable enough with your partner to know that you are growing in the right direction with that person in your life, accepting that it is a process, not an arrived-upon destination.

An activity to work this through is to do a pro-con list about your relationship in terms of things that you are learning from your relationship about yourself?what are the good and bad things you have learned in your relationship? ?Then after doing this, ask yourself in the big picture if you are satisfied with your growth.

If you are not satisfied with your growth, ask if you need to change your partner or if you need to change yourself. ?Or both. ?We complement in order to love others and ourselves.

Marriage and relationships are not easy and need work. ?Always and perpetually. ?How committed are you to the process? ?How committed are you to complementing the needs in the other and in yourself?
