DEATH VALLEY, Calif. (AP) ? Scorching heat blistered the Southwest on Saturday, where highs between 115 and 120 degrees were recorded for parts of Arizona, Nevada and California.
Forecasters said temperatures in sunbaked Las Vegas shot up to 115 degrees on Saturday afternoon, two degrees short of the city's all-time record.
Phoenix hit 119 degrees by mid-afternoon, breaking the record for June 29 that was set in 1994. And large swaths of California sweltered under extreme heat warnings, which are expected to last into Tuesday night ? and maybe even longer.
The forecast for Death Valley called for 128 degrees Saturday, but it was 3 degrees shy of that, according to unofficial reports from the National Weather Service. Death Valley's record high of 134 degrees, set a century ago, stands as the highest temperature ever recorded on Earth.
A couple hours south in Baker, the temperature peaked at an unofficial 117 degrees in the road tripper's oasis in the Mojave Desert on Interstate 15. The strip of gas stations and restaurants between Los Angeles and Las Vegas is known by travelers for the giant thermometer that often notes temperatures in the triple digits.
At the Mad Greek restaurant there, a waitress called out orders for "Chocolate shake! Strawberry shake!" while the temperature hovered at 112 degrees during the lunch rush.
In Southern California, Riverside saw 105 degrees, and Palm Springs reached 122 degrees. At Lancaster Fox Field in Los Angeles County, temperatures reached 111, a record.
To make matters worse, National Weather Service meteorologists John Dumas said cooling ocean breezes haven't been traveling far enough inland overnight to fan Southern California's overheated valleys and deserts.
Burbank set a record overnight low with temperatures dipping to 74 degrees overnight, much warmer than the previous record of 68 degrees for Saturday's early hours.
In Northern California, temperatures Saturday reached the upper 90s in San Jose. Farther north, triple-digit temps were reached in downtown Sacramento on Saturday, according to the weather service.
Authorities say a man died and another was hospitalized in serious condition Saturday afternoon in Las Vegas.
Las Vegas fire and rescue spokesman Tim Szymanski says paramedics responded to a home with no air conditioning and found an elderly man dead. He says while the man had medical issues, paramedics thought his condition was aggravated by the heat.
Paramedics say another elderly man was on a long trip in his car when the air conditioning went out. Paramedics say he taken to the hospital in serious condition with heat stroke after he stopped in Las Vegas.
Cooling stations were set up to shelter the homeless and elderly people who can't afford to run their air conditioners. In Phoenix, Joe Arpaio, the famously hard-nosed sheriff who runs a tent jail, planned to distribute ice cream and cold towels to inmates this weekend.
Officials said personnel were added to the Border Patrol's search-and-rescue unit because of the danger to people trying to slip across the Mexican border. At least seven people have been found dead in the last week in Arizona after falling victim to the brutal desert heat.
Temperatures are also expected to soar across Utah and into Wyoming and Idaho, with triple-digit heat forecast for the Boise area. Cities in Washington state that are better known for cool, rainy weather should break the 90s next week.
The heat was so punishing that rangers took up positions at trailheads at Lake Mead in Nevada to persuade people not to hike. Zookeepers in Phoenix hosed down the elephants and fed tigers frozen fish snacks. Dogs were at risk of burning their paws on scorched pavement, and airlines kept close watch on the heat for fear that it could cause flights to be delayed.

ROME (Reuters) - Astrophysicist Margherita Hack, a popular science writer, public intellectual and the first woman to lead an astronomical observatory in Italy, died on Saturday at the age of 91.
Known as the "lady of the stars", Hack's research contributed to the spectral classification of many groups of stars, and the asteroid 8558 Hack is named after her.
She introduced astrophysics to a broad Italian audience, from university textbooks to colorful tomes of astronomy for children, and was astronomy chair at the University of Trieste and director of the Trieste Astronomical Observatory from 1964 to 1987, the first woman to hold the position.
Hack was one of Italy's most visible scientists over her career and remained a grey-haired media presence into her 90s, often consulted for her assessment of the issues of the day from a wooden rocking chair in her book-lined Trieste home.
An outspoken atheist in a predominantly Catholic country, Hack was known for her opposition to the influence of religious beliefs over scientific research, and lobbied for legalized abortion, euthanasia, animal protection and gay rights.
One of her many books, "Why I am Vegetarian", published at the age of 89, outlined Hack's belief that there was no difference between human and animal pain and that eating meat damaged the environment, sparking debate in a country with a proud tradition of meatballs, beef pasta dishes and cured hams.
In December 2012 she told a reporter she had decided not to have a heart operation that could prolong her life, wryly commenting that she might as well save the Italian public health service the money, and saying she preferred to stay at home with her books and her husband of seven decades, Aldo De Rosa.
"I do not believe in the afterlife," she said, chuckling and animated, in her final television appearance in March. "When I die my particles will flutter about the terrestrial atmosphere."

MANY commentators, including this newspaper, like to compare China?s economy with America?s, the world?s biggest, which it is on course to rival in size if not in sophistication. Recently, however, parallels between the two economies have started to look more ominous. China suddenly seems to be exactly five years behind America. After several years of excessive credit, much of it in the shadows of the banking system, China?s financial institutions stopped lending to each other this month; on June 20th interbank interest rates briefly soared to 25%. The crunch seemed horribly reminiscent of America?s financial crisis in 2008, from which it has yet to recover in full.
Two questions emerge from this. Is China?s economy in as much trouble as America?s was in 2008? And have the authorities done the right thing? The answer to both is: not really. A lot depends on China now pushing through reforms.
The pros and cons of already owning your bad banks
China?s economy certainly has some worrying excesses. Credit has been rising much faster than GDP, and property prices, especially in coastal cities, have been soaring. That is often a sign of trouble. Sharp rises in lending, accompanied by property booms, set the stage for America?s crisis in 2008 and many others like it. In those cases, when rash investments turned sour banks went bust, lending stalled and confidence evaporated. Governments had to step in, recapitalising some banks and urging others to resume lending.
Yet China?s situation is different in important ways. It has an extraordinarily high savings rate. Unlike America in 2008, the country as a whole is living well within its means. Its banks are subject to pretty stringent rules: their loans cannot exceed 75% of their deposits, and, unlike many countries, China is already implementing the global prescriptions on bank capital known as Basel 3. And the state already owns the biggest banks. That has its drawbacks (too many loans have gone to state-favoured firms), but a bonus is that, when those loans turn bad, the state does not need to nationalise anything: it can tell the banks to keep lending while it decides how to allocate the losses and when. In effect, China?s state can serve as a bankruptcy judge for the economy, keeping creditors in check, spreading the pain in an orderly fashion and, above all, preserving the value of the economy as a going concern.
China?s cash crunch also came about for a different reason. In 2008 America?s interbank market froze because banks refused to lend to each other. China?s froze last week because the central bank itself refused to lend. Despite the need of some banks for cash as the end of the quarter approached, the central bank sat on its hands, allowing rates to spike and signalling its determination to restrain the reckless growth of credit.
Letting interbank rates spike is a brutally effective, if crude, way to punish overstretched lenders; it may also have sent a useful message to profligate local governments. But it risks punishing everyone else, too (see?article). As a result of the central bank?s abstention, rumours swirled about bank defaults and ATMs running out of cash. On June 24th China?s stockmarkets suffered their worst day in years; the Shanghai composite index fell by 5.3%. The central bank?s inaction threatened to endanger the confidence that makes banking possible. Fortunately, the authorities eventually woke up to the danger, moving to calm the markets on June 25th.
The priorities now should be to start cleaning up the financial system and rebalancing the economy. Letting banks raise interest rates on deposits would help them attract funds that are now disappearing into the shadow banking system. Introducing deposit insurance would also help distinguish protected deposits from unprotected, shadowy alternatives.
The government also needs to cool some overheated industries and liberate others. It should suppress speculative demand for housing by imposing an annual property tax on the market value of homes, broadening a pilot tax in Chongqing and Shanghai. And it should do more to encourage private investment in industries, from railways to telecoms, that are now dominated by state-owned enterprises. That would free China?s banks to lend to other sources.
Such reforms will take time to work and will slow the economy in the short term. Growth may run at only 6% next year, according to Dragonomics, a research firm?a sharp reduction from the double-digit rate that China has become accustomed to, and significantly below the government?s target for this year of 7.5%. That may cause a flurry of anxiety in Beijing. Yet the alternative is more wasteful lending and unproductive spending. China is a resilient economy that has grown its way out of problems in the past. But if it lets bubbles expand, then comparisons with America may become more apposite.

SOUTHAMPTON, New York: World number one Park In-Bee, chasing her third major title of the year, fired a four-under par 72 on Friday to take the US Women's Open lead just as fog halted the second round.
The South Korean superstar had a nine-under par total of 135 and a two-stroke lead over compatriot I.K. Kim.
Kim was in the clubhouse on seven-under 137 after a three-under 69 that included five birdies and two bogeys.
American Lizette Salas carded a 72 at Sebonack Golf Club for a four-under total of 140. England's Jodi Ewart Shadoff was four-under for the tournament through 15 holes when play was halted for the day, with the second round to resume Saturday morning.
"I think we got very lucky that we finished today," said Park, who capped her round with the last of her six birdies at the par-five 18th.
"I played very good golf today. I gave myself a lot of good opportunities, a very good ball-striking day. The long putts seemed to be going well today. I left a couple out there, but very satisfied with today's score."
Park, whose five titles in 2013 include major triumphs at the Kraft Nabisco Championship and the LPGA Championship, opened her round with a birdie at the first.
She had two bogeys and two more birdies in her outward run, then gathered steam on the back nine.
At the 13th, she hit a wedge over the green but made a 20-footer for birdie.
At 15 she landed a sand wedge within a foot before draining a 12-footer at the last.
"I'd say it was a little tougher to play in the fog, but I made a birdie so I don't think it really came into effect for me," she said.
"I was able to see the pin on the third shot, so I think that was good enough."
Overnight rain softened the course, but players found it windier on Friday, with the conditions changing frequently from sunny to overcast to foggy and back.
That made a good round all the more satisfying, Park said.
"It really made me think today that with the wind and fog, it just really made me think. I think that is what the US Open is all about."
Kim had five birdies and two bogeys in her three-under 69. She missed a 12-foot birdie putt at her final hole of the day, the ninth, but was pleased to emerge with the clubhouse lead on seven-under 137.
"Anything under par I thought was going to be a great score," Kim said.
"Definitely more wind out there. The wind was a little different direction and it was changing a little bit. Definitely tricky to adjust to the wind on some holes.
"But the greens were a little softer with the rain, so I was able to give myself some chances."
Salas had two birdies and two bogeys in her even par effort.
"I'm not as pleased with it just because I was striking the ball very well," Salas said.
"At the same time, you have to look at the bright side, and you have to take into effect the wind and the weather, how it's a completely different golf course.
"I was still hitting my targets and even though the putts didn't fall, I still was confident over every shot.
"You just can't be too greedy out here," Salas said.
"Just hitting fairways, hitting greens, that was my goal.
"Eventually the putts will drop."
Park is trying to become the first woman to win the first three major championships in a year in which more than three tournaments were designated as majors.
Babe Zaharias won all three majors in 1950, comprising the Titleholders Championship, Women's Western Open and the US Women's Open.
"It's tough not to think about it, but I just try to think that's not a big deal," Park said.
"If I want to do it so much, it's just so tough and it puts too much pressure on you."
In 1961 Mickey Wright won the LPGA Championship US Women's Open and Titleholders but was third in the Western Open designated a major that year.
In 1986, Pat Bradley won the Kraft Nabisco, LPGA Championship and du Maurier Classic but missed out at the US Women's Open.

CHICAGO (AP) ? The emotional pain and practical demands facing Nelson Mandela's family are universal: confronting the final days of an elderly loved one. There are no rules for how or when the end may arrive. Some choose to let go with little medical interference; others seek aggressive treatment. Mandela's status as a respected global figure only complicates the situation, doctors and end-of-life experts say.
Mandela "is not only revered he is loved and profoundly admired by people all over the world and the sense of letting go must be difficult for everyone involved," said Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease specialist at Vanderbilt University.
In much of Africa, people are considered fortunate to live past age 60. For those who reach old age, death is still seen as sad, but friends and family typically celebrate with big parties to honor a life well-lived. Taking extraordinary measures to keep that person alive would be considered dishonorable, said Dr. Sola Olopade, the Nigerian-born clinical director for the University of Chicago's Center for Global Health.
If such measures are being used for Mandela, many could consider it "quite painful," Olopade said, "because those are not the last memories you want to have for someone with such an exemplary life."
U.S. doctors said Mandela's lung infection is most likely pneumonia, a very common cause of illness and death in the elderly.
The infection is usually caused by bacteria and causes lungs to fill with fluid or pus, making breathing difficult and often causing fever and weakness. Treatment includes antibiotics and extra oxygen, often from a mechanical ventilator.
In the United States, an elderly person critically ill with pneumonia would typically be hospitalized in an intensive care unit and put on a mechanical ventilator, or breathing machine, said Dr. J.P. Kress. He is director of the University of Chicago's medical intensive care unit's section on lung and critical care. Ventilators often require a breathing tube down the throat, and patients need to be sedated because of the discomfort.
These patients typically are hooked up to feeding tubes, intravenous fluids and all kinds of monitoring machines to check heart rate, blood pressure and other functions. For long stays, lying prone in a hospital bed, they have to be periodically moved into different positions to prevent bed sores; their arms and legs have to be exercised to fight muscle wasting.
Mandela has been hospitalized several times since December for a recurring lung infection, and he has had tuberculosis.
In a hospitalization in March and April, doctors drained fluid from around his lungs, making it easier for him to breathe. He got care at home until he returned to the hospital on June 8.
For elderly patients hospitalized repeatedly with lung problems, the chances for recovery are often grim, Kress said.
"It's possible he's sitting in a chair asking, 'When am I going to get out of the hospital?' but that's very unlikely," he said.
Patients so critically ill may have ups and downs, and small changes like needing a little less help from a ventilator may be seen as a sign of improvement even when the outlook remains poor, Kress said.
Schaffner, the Vanderbilt doctor, said, "There are always little glimmers of hope. It's not a straight line down ... when you're so gravely ill."
Ada Levine faced end-of-life decisions with her mother, Maria Robles of Chicago. And it was difficult even though her mother had made her wishes known. Robles died two weeks ago at age 75 after 12 years of heart failure and other problems that had her in and out of the hospital.
"It was not going to get better," Levine said. "You're hopeful. You believe in miracles and 'maybe.' At some point you realize there is no miracle and you have to be strong and do the right thing."
Her mother did not want life support, but following that directive is easier said than done, Levine said.
"It's brutal, very difficult, hard, to watch this person decline and think now you're responsible for making their decisions."
Schaffner went through the same experience with his mother. She died 10 years ago at age 84 after several strokes and then pneumonia.
When she was still lucid, the family discussed end-of-life care. She did not want to be kept alive on a ventilator. So when she developed pneumonia and was hospitalized, she got comfort care ? fluids, antibiotics and sedatives to calm her anxiety over struggling to breathe ? but no intensive treatments with fancy machines.
After several days, when it became clear "there was zero chance she was going to turn around," the family brought her home, with hospice care, and she died less than two weeks after falling ill, Schaffner said.
Loretta Downs, former president of the Chicago End-of-Life Care Coalition, said decisions about life support should turn around the patient's wishes.
"Very often it's not the person who's dying's choice," but the family's, she said. "Now that we can prolong dying there's this whole question of are we prolonging dying versus prolonging living? It's not comfortable to be on life support."

SALISBURY ? If you?re ever asked to name the Rowan County pitcher who allowed two homers and still pitched a shutout, southpaw Connor Johnson is the answer to that trivia question.
On a freaky Friday, lightning, followed by heavy rain, halted Rowan?s game with Concord at Newman Park in the bottom of the sixth. Rowan led 19-3 at that point, but when the game could not be resumed, the official score reverted back to the last completed inning.
It was 17-0 after five, which Johnson didn?t seem to mind at all.
?With that kind of lead, I was just filling up the strike zone, throwing fastballs to guys looking for fastballs,? Johnson said. ?But those homers didn?t count, anyway. So I guess my ERA is still low.?
Low and getting lower.
Johnson (3-0) set the tone for a Rowan romp with a five-pitch first inning. When he went back to the mound for his second inning of work, he already owned a 3-0 lead, thanks to red-hot Chance Bowden.
Bowden?s three-run homer over the left-field wall in his first at-bat got the slugging first baseman started on a 4-for-4 night with six RBIs.
?We ran into a buzz-saw tonight, and Rowan hit the ball no matter what we threw and no matter where we threw it,? Concord coach Tommy Small said. ?It?s not like they just hit bad pitches. They hit some good pitches. That pitch Bowden hit out was a pretty good pitch.?

LONDON (AP) ? Petra Kvitova avoided becoming the latest former champion to be knocked out in the first week at Wimbledon, rallying from a break down in the final set Saturday to beat Ekaterina Makarova of Russia 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 and reach the fourth round.
The match had been halted Friday with Makarova up 2-1 in the third set, but the eighth-seeded Kvitova broke right back when play resumed and won the next two games as well. After losing her own serve, the Czech player broke again for a 5-3 lead and then converted her third match point with a forehand winner.
"It was another day for me," Kvitova said. "I played really well. I should go for every point and play my game. So I played quite aggressively. That was the key."
Kvitova won Wimbledon in 2011 but has struggled to match that performance since and has slipped from second to eighth in the rankings. She has a good chance of reaching her second final at the All England Club, however, having seen second-seeded Victoria Azarenka and former champion Maria Sharapova already eliminated on her side of the draw.
To have a chance at another title, though, Kvitova said her consistency has to improve.
"In 2011 I played really well. I mean, I play my best, for sure. Every shot was going to the court," she said. "It's not the same this year. ... I drop off little bit. It's always little bit up and down, but I hope it will be more up than down."
There was another upset on Centre Court, however, as ninth-seeded Richard Gasquet lost to Bernard Tomic, the talented Australian whose father has been barred from tournaments because of an assault case.
Tomic, who in 2011 as an 18-year-old qualifier became the youngest Wimbledon quarterfinalist since Boris Becker in 1985, won 7-6 (7), 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (5).
Former runner-up Tomas Berdych also advanced, beating Kevin Anderson of South Africa 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-5.
Later Saturday, top-ranked Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams were set to play their third-round matches, also looking to avoid further upsets after seven-time champion Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were both eliminated early.
Because of rain over the last two days, Wimbledon organizers were playing a bit of catch-up with the schedule on Saturday before Sunday's rest day.
Among several other matches that had been postponed, No. 20 Mikhail Youzhny of Russia beat Viktor Troicki 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 to set up a fourth-round meeting with second-seeded Andy Murray, who won in straight sets on Friday.
Two other seeded players went out against unseeded opposition, as No. 22 Juan Monaco of Argentina fell 6-4, 7-6 (8), 6-4 to Frenchman Kenny De Schepper, while No. 26 Benoit Paire of France lost 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 to Lukasz Kubot of Poland.
Sloane Stephens of the U.S. reached the fourth round for the first time, coming back to close out an uneven 7-6 (3), 0-6, 6-4 victory over 196th-ranked qualifier Petra Cetkovska of the Czech Republic.
Resuming at the start of the third set, the 17th-seeded Stephens fell behind 2-0, but Cetkovska double-faulted three times while letting the American take a 4-3 edge. Stephens made a name for herself at the Australian Open in January, when she defeated Serena Williams en route to the semifinals.
No. 23 Andreas Seppi of Italy kept up his perfect record in five-set matches in 2013, winning his seventh straight by defeating 12th-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan 3-6, 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-4. Seppi also beat Denis Istomin in five sets in the first round, and won two five-setters each at this year's Australian Open and French Open. He also rallied from two sets down in a Davis Cup match this year.
Eleventh-seeded Roberta Vinci made it an even better day for Italy, cruising past No. 18 Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia 6-1, 6-4.
As is traditional on the middle Saturday of the tournament, the Royal Box on Centre Court was filled with a number of invited sports stars, this year mainly British gold-medal winners from the London Olympics. Among those getting the biggest ovation from the crowd were cyclists Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton ? as well as Murray, who donned a suit and tie to make a brief appearance in the box to celebrate his singles gold medal won on Centre Court.
Laura Robson then made it another good day for the home crowd when she became the first British woman since Sam Smith in 1998 to reach the fourth round.
Helped by a crucial overturned call, Robson rallied from a set and a break down to beat Marina Erakovic of New Zealand 1-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Erakovic served for the match in the second set, only for Robson to break back. Having then earned a set point at 6-5, Robson barely got a return back that looped high and just caught the edge of the line, but was called out before Erakovic could smack a winner. Robson successfully challenged the call and the point was replayed, with Erakovic double-faulting to hand her opponent the set.
Robson then jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third set, and clinched the victory with a forehand winner.
"I was getting my butt kicked basically (in the first set)," Robson said. "I was really struggling (with) her serve. She was playing really well. So I just thought, just going to try as best as I can, work as hard as possible and just stick with it until she starts to get nervous, which is what happened."

Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev wrote anti-American messages while hiding from police in a boat and had downloaded instructions on making bombs from an al-Qaeda magazine around the time of the attack, a grand jury indictment charged Thursday.
Prosecutors release details in the indictment against Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
The 30-count indictment includes charges of using weapons of mass destruction and killing four people, federal prosecutors announced more than two months since the attacks.
Tsarnaev, 19, has been accused of setting off bombs near the finish line of the city's annual race on April 15 with the help of his brother Tamerlan. The blasts killed three people, and investigators believe the brothers killed a university police officer in the days after the attack while attempting to evade capture.
The indictment alleges that the two brothers used improvised explosive devices made from pressure cookers, explosive powder and shrapnel that ?were designed to shred skin, shatter bone, and cause extreme pain and suffering, as well as death,? according to the rand jury indictment. ??
While hiding from police in a boat in the backyard of a Watertown, Mass., home, Tsarnaev scrawled anti-American messages that gave investigators some insights into why the teen allegedly carried out the attack.
"The U.S. Government is killing our innocent civilians," "I can't stand to see such evil go unpunished," and "We Muslims are one body you hurt one you hurt us all" were some of the messages he scribbled while lying in the boat wounded.
At a press conference Thursday, officials declined to comment on whether they viewed the notes as a confession.
United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz also would not specifically describe the motive behind the brothers? attacks, but said the indictment indicates they were protesting American foreign policy.
NBC's Pete Williams has the latest on the 30 counts Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been charged with.
The document shows Tsarnaev frequently used the Internet to read radical Islamic publications that often advocated for violence. An issue of al-Qaeda?s Inspire magazine found on his computer had instructions for building explosives using pressure cookers, according to the charges.
He also downloaded a publication called ?Defense of the Muslim Lands, the First Obligation After Imam,? which ?advocates violence designed to terrorize the perceived enemies of Islam,? according to the indictment.?
Seventeen of the charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison or death. Ortiz said it will be up to Attorney General Eric Holder whether prosecutors will seek the death penalty.
Tsarnaev was severely injured after a gun battle with police and has been held in a Massachusetts prison hospital after his April 19 capture. His brother Tamerlan was killed in the course of the manhunt.
Though the brothers have lived in in the United States for about 10 years, they hail from Dagestan, a turbulent region that has become a hotbed for Islamic extremism. In early 2012, Tamerlan Tsarnaev traveled to the region, a move that prompted Russia to alert U.S. authorities of possible terrorist activities. An FBI investigation at the time was inconclusive.
FBI interviewed the man but found no signs that he had been radicalized.
The indictment gives a detailed account of many known facts about the attack the Tsarnaevs, but also includes some details about how they prepared for bombing.
In February, Tamerlan Tsarnaev traveled to New Hampshire where he purchased 48 mortars explosive powder from a fireworks store.
The two also went to a Manchester, N.H., gun range for practice in late March where they rented 9mm handguns, the indictment states.
Tsarnaev is scheduled to be arraigned July 10 in Boston.

A new iron nanoparticle catalyst developed by researchers in Japan and Canada promises to drastically improve the efficiency of hydrogenation, a key chemical process used in a wide array of industrial applications. Cleaner, safer and cheaper than traditional rare metal-based catalysts, the new, more environmentally friendly technique marks a breakthrough for the emerging field of green chemistry.
Hydrogenation, the reaction of molecular hydrogen with another compound or element, is one of the world's most highly studied chemical reactions, with industrial applications ranging from petrochemistry, to food production, to pharmaceuticals.
Most such applications of hydrogenation use rare metal catalysts such as palladium or platinum to speed up chemical reactions. While highly efficient, these metals are expensive and limited in supply, posing environmental and economic challenges.
To get around these problems, researchers at McGill University, the RIKEN Center for Sustainable Resource Science and the Institute for Molecular Science developed their new technique using iron, a much less expensive and far more abundant element. Iron has been ruled out in the past due to the fact that it rusts in the presence of oxygen and water, negating its catalytic effect.
The new technique, described in a paper published in the journal Green Chemistry, produces iron nanoparticles directly inside a polymer matrix, which protects the iron surface from rusting while allowing the reactants to reach it and react. The resulting system of polymer-stabilized iron nanoparticles in water is the first of its kind: a safe, cheap and environmentally friendly catalyst system for hydrogenation reactions.
"Our aim is to develop iron-based catalysts not only for hydrogenation but also a variety of organic transformations that can be used in future industrial applications," explains RIKEN researcher Dr. Yoichi M. A. Yamada, one of the authors of the paper. "If rare metal-based catalysts can be replaced by iron-based ones, then we can overcome our costly and dangerous dependency on rare metals."

ATHENS -- Pakistani taxi driver Muhammad Zafeer says he has to look over his shoulder when he goes to pray in Athens, where racist attackers have targeted several of the many makeshift mosques set up in cramped garages or dingy warehouses.
So Greece's plan to build a state-funded mosque in the capital, more than a century in the making, comes as a relief, even if it will be housed in a disused naval base littered with weeds and rubble in a rundown neighborhood.
"This place used to be packed but these days people are scared to even go out to pray," said Zafeer, as Muslim men in long traditional robes and colorful caps prepared for Friday prayers behind the steel-grilled windows of a former factory.
"Greece has to decide if it will be democratic or if it will go back to the Middle Ages," he said with a shrug.
Reviving the long-stalled project during Greece's worst peacetime economic crisis has divided a country that spent four centuries under Turkish Ottoman rule, where the Orthodox Church is powerful and hostility toward immigrants is rising.
Soon after the government launched a tender in May to build the mosque, the far-right Golden Dawn party, which denies accusations of links to attacks on immigrants but says it wants to "rid Greece of their stench", pledged to "fight until the bitter end" to block the plan.
One local bishop, Seraphim, was so furious he took the matter to Greece's highest administrative court, the Council of State. A ruling is not expected for months.
The mosque's critics say Athens, kept afloat by an international bailout, cannot spare the almost one million euros it will cost given that Greece is in a sixth year of recession, with record high unemployment and sinking living standards.
"There's money to build a mosque but there's no money for Greeks to live with dignity," Golden Dawn, which polls show is the third most popular party in Greece, said in a statement.

Plan to 'Islamize' Greece?
Protests have been gathering steam outside the planned site at the naval base in Votanikos, a rundown industrial neighborhood lined with car dealerships and factories.
Led by the far-right National Front movement, flag-waving demonstrators including nuns and men in military-style shirts, chanted "If you want a mosque, build it in parliament!" at the first of the protests at the end of May.
Flyers depicting a mosque in a circle with a line through it were strewn across the floor.
"It's not exactly the best time to go ahead with it right now," said Theodore Couloumbis of the ELIAMEP foreign policy think tank. "The country has plenty of instability of its own due to the economic crisis".
In the port of Piraeus, where hundreds of Greek Orthodox faithful packed the 174-year-old Holy Trinity church to hear Bishop Seraphim deliver Sunday mass, 62-year-old retired naval captain Ioannis Kaniaros called the decision "provocative".
Seraphim, who is challenging the decision in court, says building a mosque is unconstitutional and part of a plan to "Islamize" Greece, a major gateway for Asian immigrants trying to enter the European Union each year.
"I want to emphasize that Athens is the only European capital that went through four centuries of slavery under Islam, and managed to free itself just 200 years ago by spilling rivers of blood," he said in an interview.
Racially motivated attacks
Greece is home to about 1 million immigrants, and groups like Golden Dawn say undocumented workers have pushed up crime and put a burden on state resources at a time of crisis.
Muslim groups estimate more than 200,000 Muslims from countries including Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh live in Athens alone.
Racially motivated attacks have risen to alarming levels during the crisis, according to the United Nations' refugee agency UNHCR, which said the authorities were doing little to tackle the problem.

The city, which has not had a formal mosque since Greece won independence from occupying Ottomans in 1832, has come under fire by human rights groups such as Amnesty International for being one of the few European capitals without one.
Repeated plans for a post-Ottoman mosque in Athens began in earnest in 1880, with an act of parliament, but all fell through, including one timed for the 2004 Olympic Games.
Reports in local media that Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan offered to fund a mosque in Athens to his Greek counterpart Antonis Samaras during talks earlier this year have also angered some Greeks, who feel a mosque would represent a continuing Turkish presence in the country.
Local media say the new mosque, which will hold about 400 worshippers, will not have a minaret so as to blend in with the environment and not resemble a mosque, but the government has provided few details.
The office of architect Alexandros Tombazis, which will design the building next to an existing chapel with a bell-tower, declined to comment, saying it has been advised by officials not to because the issue is "too sensitive".

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? Several members of Congress representing coastal states are voicing concern about a proposed federal regulation that could pre-empt state bans on buying or selling shark fins.
Democratic Rep. Jared Huffman of California is being joined by representatives of New York, Florida and Guam in seeking changes to a proposal they say would take away a state tool to protect shark populations.
California, Hawaii, New York and several other states have passed regulations on the sale and trade of shark fins, which are used in a soup considered an Asian delicacy. California's ban on the sale, trade and possession of shark fins will go into effect Monday after a compromise allowed time for restaurants and businesses to use up their existing supplies.
A letter from the members of Congress and the representative of Guam states that a proposed rule by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's fisheries management division, the National Marine Fisheries Services, would undermine those laws. California state lawmakers were also circulating an opposition letter.
"If we are to address the problem of shark-finning head on, we must allow state and territorial statutes to complement the federal regulations and further the U.S. leadership in global shark conservation," states the letter, which has not yet been sent to the fisheries service but was given in advance to The Associated Press.
In addition to Huffman, it is to be signed by Democratic Reps. Sam Farr of California and Grace Meng of New York, Florida Republican Rep. Vern Buchanan and Democratic Delegate Madeleine Bordallo of Guam. Their letter is dated July 8, which is when the public comment period on the proposed rule is scheduled to end.
A request for comment was left with a press officer for the National Marine Fisheries Services.
The proposal under consideration says state and territory shark fin laws are pre-empted if they are found to be inconsistent with federal fishery management plans or regulations.
Conservation groups have begun circulating petitions against the proposal, but representatives of the fishing industry have argued that federal pre-emption is necessary to maintain fishing of commercially viable shark species.
Congress passed and President Barack Obama signed the Shark Conservation Act of 2010 in an effort to strengthen federal laws against shark finning in U.S. waters and require that sharks be landed with their fins still attached. Since then, the fisheries service has been working to craft regulations to implement the act.
Conservation and animal advocacy groups said fishermen have been able to sidestep the rules by taking only the fins of sharks and dumping the carcasses back into the sea.
Jill Hepp, director of shark conservation at The Pew Charitable Trusts, said states should have the right to go beyond federal rules in protecting shark populations.
"If this goes forward as they are proposing, this has the potential to undermine the states' shark fin trade ban and it would be a considerable setback for global shark conservation," Hepp said.
But John Whiteside, an attorney for Sustainable Fisheries Association, a Massachusetts nonprofit founded by four seafood processors, said the federal government should have the final say over regulations, especially fish caught in federal waters.
Not doing so would violate trade laws and run afoul of treaties the federal government has with governments around the world, he said. Commercial fishing groups were successful at getting exemptions in some states for certain species of sharks, such as the dogfish, a small shark also used for fish and chips that is sustainably harvested.
However, California provides no such exemption.
"You're building a wall around the state of California from which the free flow of legal goods is forbidden," he said. "If you have these states around the country that build these little islands, you can't have the free flow of commerce and that's what this country needs."
Jennifer Fearing, California state director for the Humane Society, said California drafted its bill specifically to ban the sale of shark fins, no matter where the shark was caught.
"It's not California sharks being finned," she said. "It's dried processed shark fins arriving here already processed and dried. We have no idea where those sharks come from and the only way California can protect sharks globally is if they were not selling."
California, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, New York, Oregon and Washington have passed laws banning the buying and selling of shark fins, according to The Humane Society of the United States. Similar bans are in effect in three U.S. Pacific territories ? Guam, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Documents disclosed Thursday show that the Obama administration gathered U.S. citizens' Internet data until 2011, continuing a spying program started under President George W. Bush that revealed who Americans exchanged emails with and the Internet Protocol address of their computer.
The National Security Agency ended the program that collected email logs and timing, but not content, in 2011 because it did not do what was needed to stop terrorist attacks, according to the NSA's director. Gen. Keith Alexander, who also heads the U.S. Cyber Command, said all data was purged at that time.
The Guardian newspaper on Thursday released documents detailing the collection, though the program was also described earlier this month by The Washington Post.
The latest revelation follows previous leaks from ex-NSA contractor Edward Snowden, who is presumed hiding at a Moscow airport transit area, waiting to hear whether Ecuador, Iceland or another country might grant him asylum. He fled Hong Kong over the weekend and flew to Russia after being charged with violating American espionage laws.
The collection appears similar to the gathering of U.S. phone records, and seems to overlap with the Prism surveillance program of foreigners on U.S. Internet servers, both revealed by Snowden. U.S. officials have said the phone records can only be checked for numbers dialed by a terrorist suspect overseas.
Alexander said at a Baltimore conference on cybersecurity that the NSA decided to kill the Internet data gathering program because "it wasn't meeting what we needed and we thought we could better protect civil liberties and privacy by doing away with it."
He said the program was conducted under provisions of the Patriot Act, and that NSA leaders went to the Obama administration and Congress with the recommendation to shut it down.
Shawn Turner, a spokesman for the director of national intelligence, said the program has not resumed.
The IP address is the specific numeric address assigned to a computer connected to the Internet.
The Guardian reported that some collection continues, authorized as recently as December 2012, but the newspaper only published documents detailing the earlier program started under Bush in 2001.
The Washington Post had described the Internet surveillance in an earlier report, without publishing the documents or releasing as many details. The Post described it as part of four secret surveillance programs ? two aimed at phone and Internet metadata, while two more target contents of phone and Internet communications.
The records show who they exchanged emails with and the Internet Protocol address of their computer. That's the specific numeric address assigned to a computer connected to the Internet.
