DETROIT (AP) ? Nicklas Lidstrom retired Thursday after 20 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings, ending one of the best careers in NHL history.

The four-time Stanley Cup champion and seven-time Norris Trophy winner as the league's best defenseman fought back tears as he made the announcement.

"My drive and motivation are not where they to need to be to play at this level," Lidstrom said.

The 42-year-old Swede set an NHL record by playing 1,564 games with a single team. He had put retirement on hold in each of the previous two years by signing one-year contracts.

"I've been dreading this day since I became manager in 1997," Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said.

Lidstrom had 34 points and a plus-21 rating that ranked among the league leaders last season. He had 264 career goals with 1,142 points and a 450-plus rating. After being incredibly durable for 19 seasons, he missed a career-high 11 games with a bruised right ankle and was out for another game with the flu.

"That didn't sway me one way or another," Lidstrom said. "A couple weeks after the season is over, you start working out. Once I started doing that I didn't have the push I need and I can't cheat myself."

He plans to move his family to Sweden and hopes to have an off-ice role with the Red Wings.

"Retiring today allows me to walk away with pride, rather than have the game walk away from me," said Lidstrom, whose oldest of four sons went to Sweden two years ago to attend school and play hockey.

Lidstrom was named the NHL's best defenseman last year for a seventh time, matching Doug Harvey's total and trailing Bobby Orr's record by one. When Lidstrom won his final Norris Trophy last summer, he was a finalist for the 11th time in 13 seasons.

Defenseman Brad Stuart, who was his teammate the past four-plus seasons, said he was amazed at Lidstrom's ability to make the right play on almost every shift game after game.

"I've played with great players who made mistakes, but I can't think of one game when I thought, 'Nick just didn't have it tonight,'" Stuart said during this year's one-series postseason. "He's that same, steady, amazing defenseman every night. I think I've seen him out of breath maybe three or four times in a few years because he's so smart, he gets himself in the right position to make a play."

The four-time Olympian also scored the gold-medal winning goal for Sweden over Finland in 2006. He became the first European-born captain to win a Stanley Cup in 2008, six years after being the first from Europe to win the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoffs MVP.

His 6-foot-2, 190-pound body is chiseled thanks to a year-round workout that includes exercise before practice and after games along with a sensible diet that includes only occasional slices of pizza and fast food. Lidstrom's teammates call him "The Perfect Human," in part because he's as humble as he is successful on the ice.

"It's one of the most emotional days in Red Wings history with Nick retiring and all you people showing your respect for such a high-quality individual," Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch said at a packed news conference that included a slew of team employees wearing Lidstrom's No. 5 red jersey with a winged wheel.

Tim Cook: Apple doubling-down on Siri, 'stay tuned' on Facebook developments

Image

Well, it looks like secrecy isn't the only thing that Apple is doubling-down on these days. Speaking at D10, Tim Cook said that that Apple is "doubling down on Siri," adding that "you'll be really pleased with what you see in the coming months on this." He did also acknowledge that Siri currently has its shortcomings, but said that "customers love it," and that "what makes Siri cool is that she has a personality." When it came to a largely non-existent iOS feature at the moment -- Facebook integration -- Cook said to "stay tuned," noting that he has "great respect for them," and that he wants Facebook's hundreds of millions of customers to have "the best experience" on the iPhone and iPad.

Just What Is Online Development? | Online Success Articles

?

The term ?web development? has expanded and advanced a great deal in the last decade. It used to be that having an internet existence was a novelty, something to throw on a business card or in a commercial. Websites were reserved for the businesses with the means to spread them widely, or for individuals that didn?t care who observed what they posted.

Web development is noticeably different these days. The end objective is the same? a site on the Internet designed to market an organization, service or firm. These days you could also sell products and services, correspond directly with the business and do so much more. What is web development these days?

Web development has actually come to be a mixture of discipline and also art, just the same as marketing. To succeed online, one needs to understand exactly what to do as well as just what not to do so that a search engine picks them up. On top of that, a website has to be produced for the ultimate utility and usability. We?ve come a long way from the days of frames, embedded music and animated backgrounds. A web page is a major tool for serious enterprises.

Another major distinction is the procedure. Web composition is no longer about setting up a descriptive page and letting it sit. Sites have to be consistently updated, with material suitable for the business and their intentions. Going too long without an update loses visitors and also loses trust. Social media websites have a substantial influence in this too. A firm that ties their internet existence into sociable media is a lot more in touch with their readers and can benefit directly from that contact.

Once again, what is web development? It?s all relating to the online presence. Holding a presence on the internet is just as essential as having a physical storefront, and takes just as much work. Designing an internet site concerns style and substance, the balance amidst a fancy site and a site that can be utilized by all. All of this needs to be carefully planned and implemented by talented designers and online developers that know the markets and know exactly what they?re doing.

Thankfully, there are a lot of proficient designers out on the market, all set to create the perfect website for any type of business, local or otherwise. As complex as it is creating an internet site, there are individuals who make it their life?s work. Virtually every great website these days has a proficient developer behind it, and it shows. That?s web development.

Many years ago, people didn?t have televisions. Many read the papers to get the news or listened to the radio. Just as satellite television has entered American homes, another thing has also been developed that is called satellite radio.

What is satellite radio? This piece of hardware allows the individual to listen to favorite recording artists and shows instead of watching it on television. Given that the United States is a vast place and there are various stations in each state, this also allows the user to listen to one back home hundreds of miles away.

Currently, there are two main players competing head on in the market. The first is called Sirius while the other is XM radio. Which of the two is better? This question depends on whom the individual will ask but both are doing quite well and more customers are signing up.

Sirius is the first to ever provide commercial free programming on all its music channels and has a wide array of accessories for customers to buy. This is despite that fact that XM radio launched a few months in advance.

The subscription fee of Sirius a little pricey compared to XM radio. When people want the best things in life, money maybe an obstacle. So the deciding factor will be what the hardware has to offer.

Satellite radio has been around for almost 5 years. Since this is considered to be the ?in thing? in the market, both companies have tied up with the major car manufacturers to have this installed in their vehicles. This is the same thing Ipod is doing so the owner can listen to the favorite tunes while on the road.

Sirius has 65 channels that feature sports, news and other programs aside from music. This includes exclusive coverage of special events such as the NFL. XM radio on the other hand has NASCAR and Fox news. It has 68 channels which is 3 more than what the other is offering to the consumer.

The accessories used by Sirius satellite radio allows the person to listen to this at home or in the car. One of the basic accessories it uses is the Sanyo CRSR-10 Plug and Play system that will cost about $ 149.99. Those who are not satisfied can have this upgraded-which will cost from $ 250 to $ 2,000.

XM radio on the other hand uses the Delphi XM Roady Receiver. This will cost an individual somewhere between $ 30 to $ 400, but those who choose to get a monthly subscription will only have to pay $ 12.95 per month.

Both the models being offered by Sirius and XM radio are easy to install. The person will just have to pay a small fee as a service charge when enlisting the help of a customer representative when this is being done.

Customers can buy the unit in a store or order this online. It is not only ordinary individuals who are very interested in this product since there are also other models for commercial use that are being broadcasted in public access systems of hotels and other retail establishments

Is Sirius satellite radio better then that XM radio? Given that both companies have different things to offer, this really depends on the tastes of the customer.

Europeans ambivalent to the euro, survey finds

LONDON (AP) ? The debt crisis that has ravaged Europe for the best part of three years has exposed a dislike of the single currency but little desire to abandon it, a wide-ranging survey of public opinion found Tuesday.

Pew Research Center's survey across eight European Union countries, including five members of the 17-country eurozone, indicated that the region's financial problems have triggered full-blown fears about the future of Europe as a political project.

"This crisis of confidence is evident in the economy, in the future, in the benefits of European economic integration, in EU membership, in the euro and in the free market system," Pew said in a statement accompanying its survey.

Despite those concerns, Pew found there was no desire for those countries that use the euro to return to their former currencies, such as the French franc or the Spanish peseta. The euro launched in 1999 and is now used by 17 countries.

In Greece, the epicenter of the debt crisis, 71 percent of those polled want to keep the euro, as against to 23 percent that want to return to the drachma. More people in Greece, which is now in its fifth year of a savage recession, think the euro has been good for them than bad ? 46 percent of those surveyed compared to 26 percent who thought it was a bad thing.

These findings may be crucial as Greece heads to the polls on June 17 in a general election many see as a referendum on the country's euro membership.

Varvara Konstantopoulou, a 65-year-old pensioner in Athens, summed up the dilemma that is at the heart of a country that is trapped between indefinite austerity and a catastrophic currency exit.

"I don't think the euro helped us. When we joined everything became more expensive," she said. "But we are trapped now. If we leave the euro, our money will not be worth anything. It's worse for people on a fixed income."

Her 45-year-old unemployed daughter, Alexia, agreed with her mother that Greece was not ready for the euro when it joined in 2001. However, she thinks the euro will survive but that in the future countries should get a grip on their public finances so there's no repeat of the current crisis.

"Otherwise they will end up like us," she said. "Every country should sort out its own problems, but they have to help us to keep things going smoothly (for the euro)."

Recent opinion polls in Greece have suggested there's a movement towards political parties, notably the conservative New Democracy, that are willing to meet the commitments the country has already made in return for its bailout lifeline.

Though Pew found little appetite for abandoning the euro, the survey revealed a prevailing skepticism over Europe's single currency.

More people in France, Italy and Spain think the euro has been more damaging than beneficial. In Italy, which has the second-highest debt burden in the eurozone after Greece, 44 percent of those people surveyed said the euro has been a bad thing, as opposed to 30 percent who think it has done good. Italy is also home to the biggest anti-euro constituency, with 40 percent of those polled wanting to return to the lira as against to 52 percent backing the euro.

Among the five euro countries surveyed there wasn't one where a majority ? over 50 percent ? of those polled thought the currency has been beneficial.

In Germany, Europe's biggest economy, more people thought it was beneficial than damaging.

"It's got a lot of advantages," said Andreas Schwanekamp, an office worker in Frankfurt, Germany. "We don't have to exchange currency when we leave the country."

Germany's exporters have benefited from the relatively low value of the euro against other key currencies such as the dollar when compared to what the deutschemark would likely be trading at.

"We're an exporter," Schwanekamp, 47, added. "If we still had the deutschemark, we would be more expensive relative to the other currencies in Europe."

The survey also found that two-thirds of Germans want to keep the currency even though the country has to make the biggest contributions to the financial bailouts.

Among the countries surveyed that did not have the euro as their currency there were big majorities in Britain, the Czech Republic and Poland who thought it has been better for them not to have been in the euro bloc.

In Washington, the Obama administration announced Tuesday it had dispatched its top international finance official to Europe for a round of discussions.

U.S. Treasury Undersecretary for International Affairs Lael Brainard was holding discussions with senior government officials in Athens on Tuesday. She was scheduled to meet with officials in Frankfurt, Germany, and Madrid, Spain, on Wednesday.

On Thursday, Brainard will meet with officials in Paris and Berlin and will wrap up her trip with further discussions in Berlin on Friday.

The U.S. Treasury said in a statement that Brainard would meet with "senior government officials in each country to discuss their plans for achieving economic stability and growth in Europe."

The Pew surveys were conducted by telephone in some countries and face-to-face in others between mid-March and mid-April, with at least 1,000 people surveyed in each country. The margin of error varied by country, from 3.3 percent to 4.4 percent.

Cabrera's homer gives Tigers sweep, 4-3 over Twins

By DAVE CAMPBELL

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:31 p.m. ET May 27, 2012

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Miguel Cabrera's two-run, one-out homer in the ninth inning lifted Detroit to a 4-3 victory over Minnesota on Sunday afternoon, as the Tigers finished a three-game sweep of the Twins in style after leaving 10 men on base earlier in the game.

Cabrera crushed a 0-2 pitch to center field from Matt Capps (0-3), who took his first blown save in 10 tries. Rookie Quintin Berry started the inning with a single.

Jose Valverde followed for his ninth save in 11 attempts. Denard Span led off with a single. After Ben Revere popped his bunt up for the first out, Joe Mauer hit a hard line out to left. Then after Span stole second, Josh Willingham walked. But Justin Morneau flied out to right.

Brayan Villarreal (1-1) recorded two outs in the eighth for the victory.

Prince Fielder had two more hits and went 9 for 12 in the series plus two walks for the Tigers, who have won 21 of their last 27 games against the Twins. After a ray-of-hope four-game winning streak on the road that included a two-game sweep of the Tigers in Detroit, the Twins have lost five in a row.

Alexi Casilla went 3 for 3 for the Twins, including an RBI single against Rick Porcello in the fourth. Mauer had two hits, tying the game at 2 with a double in the fifth. Willingham singled him in to give the Twins the lead.

P.J. Walters gave up seven hits and four walks, both highs over four appearances since being brought up from Triple-A less than three weeks ago. But he finished six innings with only two first-inning runs allowed and struck out four.

Coming off his first career complete game, a 9-2 win over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night, Walters wasn't as good this time. But he was just as gritty. The 27-year-old right-hander got a double-play grounder by Don Kelly to end the fourth with the bases loaded. He struck out Brennan Boesch to finish the fifth with the bases full. Then he escaped the sixth on a double-play groundout by Ryan Raburn after a walk and a single to start the frame.

Walters has completed six innings and allowed either two or three runs in each of his four starts. Jared Burton retired Boesch on a hard bouncer back to the mound to end the seventh with two runners on. Glen Perkins struck out two in the eighth.

But Capps couldn't finish against the Tigers, who left eight in scoring position.

They did a lot wrong, including in the first when Cabrera was out after his RBI single because he was too casual about returning to the base after he rounded it. Casilla sneaked behind him to catch the quick throw and slap the tag on the burly slugger. The Tigers still, however, wrangled out a win. That's an encouraging sign for a team widely picked to run away with the division but which has been struggling to find a rhythm.

Porcello lasted six innings, allowing nine hits, three runs and three walks with only one strikeout. He hasn't won in four starts, but this was a much better performance. He took a sharp drive by Mauer off his leg but managed to stay on his feet and throw for the out before hobbling around in pain in the third.

NOTES: Berry, who made his major league debut earlier this week when CF Austin Jackson strained an abdominal muscle, has at least one hit in each of his five games. He's 8 for 21. ... Twins RHP Nick Blackburn (strained left quadriceps) is eligible to come off the DL on Friday but will make two rehab starts for Triple-A Rochester, the first on Tuesday. "If he throws a no-hitter, he's still going to start" on Sunday, manager Ron Gardenhire said. ... The Twins start a three-game series with Oakland on Monday in a holiday matinee. LH Scott Diamond (3-1, 1.78 ERA) takes the mound for the Twins, and LH Travis Blackley (0-0, 0.00) will make his first start of the season for the A's. ... The Twins had two moving moments on the field before the game. Mauer hosted an 8-year-old boy named Grant with leukemia as part of the Make-A-Wish program, competing with him in the video game "MLB 11: The Show" with the action shown on the scoreboard above left field. Then Robert Buresh, a Minnesota Air National Guard master sergeant just returned from Afghanistan, surprised his daughters in front of home plate as they ran around the bases in a promotional contest.

Top 3 Advantages of Having Regular Pool Service in Riverside

There?s nothing worse than getting ready to take a dip in your pool and finding out, right there and then that it?s too dirty to swim in. Let?s face it, pool maintenance has been, at one time or another, every pool owner?s worst nightmare. Not only is the whole task physically tiring, but it also involves mixing different chemicals to get the water balance just right. And even though there are already a number of pool maintenance kits available on the market today, there?s a chance that your pool water isn?t going to be as clean as it would be when the professionals do it. If you simply can?t maintain your pool yourself, then it?s probably best if you just hired regular pool service in Riverside instead. ?

One of the advantages of having regular pool service is convenience. As you may already know, the task of maintaining a pool regularly can be very time consuming.

If you?re going to do it yourself, you?ll have to skim off dirt, check the filters, scrub tiles, check PH levels and prepare the chlorine.? Sometimes, you might even have to do a lot more, depending on the current state of your pool. Why would you go through all that trouble of cleaning your swimming pool, when you can easily hire experts who can do a much better job than you?? It doesn?t matter if you use your pool for exercise daily, or for occasional pool parties over the weekend, with the right pool service in riverside, you can simply relax and dive in, without worrying if the water is clean.

Another advantage to hiring a professional pool service is that it can save you from spending so much on replacement parts later on. When pool water isn?t cleaned regularly, the pumps, filters and heaters are more likely to work doubly hard, causing them to break down faster. Regular pool maintenance is important as it not only cleans the water, but it also allows the pool service personnel to check on the parts during inspection. If they start to see any of the parts malfunctioning, they?ll be able to remedy the problem before it starts to cause major damage. ?

And since pool service work is considered to be a specialized field, you can rely on the personnel to be professional about their work. From choosing the right cleaning materials to making sure that the water balance is just right, the service personnel will know just how to treat your pool, no matter what size it is. They can also provide you with valuable insights on the dos and don?ts of pool maintenance, and tips on what to do when the pool water isn?t balanced even when you?re away on holiday. You can contract the services of a pool service company to take care of your pool regularly.

Regular pool service in riverside isn?t only going to make your life easier, but it can also save you a lot of money in the long run. Look for a pool service company you can trust today and let them do the work for you.

Tea Party takes on establishment Republican in Texas Senate race

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - A U.S. Senate candidate in Texas with Tea Party backing may win enough votes in Tuesday's Republican primary to force a runoff with the state's lieutenant governor, setting up another battle for the soul of the national Republican Party.

Twice this year an insurgent conservative Senate candidate has upended a traditional Republican - in Indiana, where a candidate backed by the Tea Party movement beat longtime U.S. Senator Richard Lugar, and in Nebraska, where first-time statewide candidate Deb Fischer defeated a veteran attorney general.

Emboldened by the victories, national conservatives have turned their attention to Texas, where they believe Cuban-American Ted Cruz could be a new Republican star.

Last year, it seemed unlikely that the Texas front-runner, Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst, would face a serious threat for the seat that Republican Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison is leaving after 19 years on the job.

But that was before former state Solicitor General Cruz started drawing money from national conservative groups such as Club for Growth and FreedomWorks, and endorsements from former vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin and former presidential candidate Rick Santorum.

Dewhurst, who has the backing of Texas Governor Rick Perry, is now locked in a battle with Cruz, a Houston lawyer whose father came from Cuba with $100 sewn into his underwear.

The Republican race - almost certainly the only primary that matters in a state that has not elected a Democrat to statewide office since 1994 - is shaping up as a fight over who is the most conservative.

It looks unlikely that Dewhurst will be able to win the 50 percent-plus-one votes necessary to avoid a runoff on July 31 between the top two candidates, said Mark Jones, chairman of the political science department at Rice University in Houston.

"Everything started snowballing," Jones said. "The Cruz campaign keeps generating more and more enthusiasm."

A University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll released on Monday showed Dewhurst had the support of 40 percent of likely Republican primary voters, and Cruz had 31 percent. Former Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert had 17 percent and Craig James, a former NFL football player and ESPN analyst, got 4 percent. Another poll has Dewhurst at 46 percent, closer to the magic number to avoid a runoff.

NATIONAL ATTENTION

Dewhurst has loaned his campaign $9.2 million, his campaign said. Cruz has received $3.6 million from the Club for Growth since last December, according to regulatory filings and recent statements from the group. The Senate Conservatives Fund, led by Jim DeMint, a Republican U.S. senator from South Carolina beloved by the Tea Party, has spent just over $1 million for Cruz.

FreedomWorks has hosted 26 grassroots training events in the past year in Texas, where it has 32 distribution centers that provide volunteers with Ted Cruz yard signs and door hangers, according to Brendan Steinhauser, its director of campaigns.

The Tea Party movement and its backers, who are seeking deep cuts in U.S. government spending, say they want to elect "true" conservative candidates - such as the upstarts in Indiana and Nebraska - who will challenge the status quo in Washington.

"The conservative groups that were involved in those races are energized and all of that firepower is now focused on the race in Texas," said Drew Ryun, president of American Majority Action, a conservative group that trains activists.

But the Texas race is somewhat different. Indiana's Lugar was accused of being out of touch with the state, and ethical problems dogged Nebraska's Jon Bruning; Dewhurst's candidacy does not have such serious flaws, Jones said. But critics argue that Dewhurst is not a dynamic leader and that he has compromised with Democrats to get things done in the Texas Senate, Jones said.

"That has been his record over and over again: that he's a conciliator, he cuts the baby in half, he's increased spending," Cruz said in an interview on Thursday.

Dewhurst, who as lieutenant governor has presided over the Texas Senate since 2003, said after a campaign event at the Scholz Garten bar and restaurant in Austin on Wednesday that he has been the most fiscally and socially conservative lieutenant governor in Texas history.

Dewhurst, a former state land commissioner who stands 6-feet 6-inches tall, touts his experience as a businessman as well as serving in the U.S. Air Force and with the CIA.

In Houston on Thursday evening, Cruz told enthusiastic supporters at the Armadillo Palace restaurant that the race was going "incredibly, dizzyingly, unbelievably" well. Database analyst Henry Wycislo explained why he came to the campaign event: "Tea Party all the way."

Political scientist Jones said that if Dewhurst is forced into a runoff on July 31, summer turnout will be low and the fervor among Tea Party supporters could help Cruz.

But Dewhurst criticized the support Cruz is receiving from groups outside Texas. "One thing that Mr. Cruz is sadly mistaken on: He ain't met a fighter before like me," Dewhurst said.

Silk Hope family tradition includes farming, building furniture ...

The aroma of freshly baked bread wafted through Carrboro on May 19 as locals and visitors filtered through booths of community artisans on Main Street.

Louie Graham and his family were not there to enjoy a leisurely Saturday morning or the sweet-smelling bread. They were there to make a living.

Surrounded by wooden chests, tables and the scent of cedar, Graham said he is taking the reigns of the family business. ?I?ve been working with wood since I was eight years old,? he said.

In a business that has all but been taken over by mechanized industry, Graham said farming and woodworking are his family?s main source of income. The Grahams are almost entirely self-sustained on their family farm in Silk Hope. Graham furnished and built his house, owns his own mill for processing the lumber, and maintains a produce and livestock farm.

?My wife is a homemaker. So if she doesn?t have to get a real job, so why should I?? chuckled Graham.

But Graham is just following tradition. For the past 70 years woodworking has been the life source Dan Graham, Louie?s father. He began honing his craft at the age of 15 in Ohio before eventually acquiring a bachelor?s degree in education and exporting his skills to the Republic of Philippines.

?While I lived there, I farmed coffee and taught the locals some woodworking skills to help jumpstart their economy,? Dan Graham said. After rumors of insurgence began rippling through the islands, Dan Graham brought his woodworking talents back to the states, North Carolina specifically.

He then spent the next few years raising his family and cultivating the hobby in his offspring. Dan Graham, whose father was also a carpenter, said it runs in his blood. ?If you?re a farmer?s son, you?re likely to be a farmer.?

The 83-year old said that although his output rate has slowed due to his age, working with wood remains a favorite pastime of his.

?It takes me a while to finish things now, but it keeps my hands busy and my mind active,? he said.

Despite the family?s extensive history in the business, they have not been able to dodge repercussions of the recession and foreign competition.

?One woman showed me a cookbook stand she found on Amazon,? said Graham, Sr. ?I couldn?t make it for five times what they were selling it for.?

But the Grahams? prices haven?t stooped to meet the competition.

?We set our price for what we think is fair for the material and the labor,? he said as he motioned to a nearby cedar chest. ?That chest right there is $320. If someone offered us $319 we wouldn?t accept.?

Although Louie Graham said the family company has suffered from the economy, it still attracts enough interest to stay in business. One patron, Jeff Manly, said it was the uniqueness of the items that keeps him coming back for more. Manly, the owner of three of the handcrafted tables, stopped by to eye the new inventory and considered purchasing a fourth.

?I?ve never seen anything like them at retailers like Lowe?s or Home Depot, he said. ?They?ve held up perfectly for the six or seven years we?ve had them.?

Though the sale of big ticket items like chest of drawers, or in one case, a coffin, is usually a hit-or-miss at the market, Tricia Graham helps to stabilize the family?s income by selling produce and meat.

Tricia Graham, Louie?s wife, said she never planned on making a living as a farmer.

?When we married after college, we were both education majors,? she said. ?We decided we could either teach and be poor and hungry, or farm and be poor,? she said with a smile.

Tricia Graham said she hopes her children will continue their interest in the family tradition. To offset the manual chores that accompany farming, she offers her children an incentive.

?Not many teenagers are willing to get up every Saturday at 4 a.m.,? she said. ?But we gave them their own plots to grow produce on and told them that they get to keep half of the money they earn at the market.?

But Louie, Jr., the youngest of the clan, doesn?t appear to have been gripped with the thrill of agricultural life just yet.

?What?s woodworking?? he responded after being asked about the business. ?On the farm I just do the lazy stuff ? like watch TV,? said the 7-year-old.

But Tricia said little Louie helps out more than he lets on. ?We give him the easy stuff to farm, like squash and zucchini,? she said.

Although the price of produce grown organically is typically more than the prices found at grocers, it?s the taste that keeps the regulars coming back.

?When people are looking for a tomato, they want an ugly one,? she said. ?That?s how you can tell it?s homegrown.?

Futurity.org ? Self-employed boost small town economy

"We often look at self-employment as a stopgap measure, something done out of desperation," says agricultural economist Stephan Goetz. "But, in fact, self-employment has a tangible effect in raising income growth and lowering poverty." (Credit: iStockphoto)

PENN STATE (US) ? People in rural counties who work for themselves may add a boost to local economies, improving income and job growth, according to economists.

The share of self-employed workers in nonmetro counties significantly predicted personal income and job growth, as well as declines in family poverty levels, says Stephan Goetz, professor of agricultural economics and regional economics at Penn State, and director of the Northeast Regional Center for Rural Development.

?We often look at self-employment as a stopgap measure, something done out of desperation,? Goetz says. ?But, in fact, self-employment has a tangible effect in raising income growth and lowering poverty.?

The researchers say that the self-employed can perform a range of services in a community.

?They can be the people who mow your lawn and shovel your walk,? Goetz says. ?But they can also be more innovative entrepreneurs, like the person with a new technology idea or someone who is manufacturing medical equipment.?

Goetz and Anil Rupasingha, research economist and policy advisor at the Federal Reserve Bank in Atlanta, reported their findings in the online version of Papers in Regional Science. They examined statistics from the Bureau of Economic Analysis on the self-employed in 3,000 metro and nonmetro counties.

People who work for themselves, but do not own farms, have become a larger part of the economic mix of rural counties.

Between 1969 and 2009, the number of the self-employed in nonmetro areas has risen from 2.9 million to 5.6 million, an increase of 93 percent. Farm ownerships, which were once the backbone of rural economies, have fallen from 2.1 million to 1.3 million, a 38 percent decrease.

The researchers did not find results as robust in metro counties. The share of self-employed workers was generally favorable for economic performance, but did not necessarily reduce family poverty levels.

Since larger counties tend to be more economically self-contained, economic conditions that prompt self-employment, such as sudden economic downturns, have less of an impact in those counties.

?On the other hand, rural counties are smaller, perhaps more open to commuter flows, and thus also more likely to be affected by events in adjacent counties,? Goetz says. ?They also have higher self-employment rates, so a larger proportion of the labor market would be affected if there is a shock.?

The researchers studied economic trends during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. They used long time periods as one way to ensure that self-employment was not caused by economic factors such as growth, but that it created growth.

Goetz says that economic leaders in rural areas should recognize and encourage self-employed entrepreneurs.

?Community leaders usually are thinking about big companies, and there?s a mindset that economic development comes from the outside?recruiting auto manufacturers and big stores, for example,? he says. ?But leaders also should celebrate local businesses and look at the self-employed, in addition, as important to the economy.?

Goetz says to encourage growth, leaders could also help the self-employed by organizing networking meetings and alerting them to exporting opportunities. Economic development groups also can assist entrepreneurs with credit and grant applications.

Iran Sanctions Negotiation - Business Insider

Iran's agreement with the IAEA for an investigation of its nuclear program has some hoping that US and EU sanctions are working.

The six nations starting talks today in Baghdad certainly hope so.

But in an interview with the Council on Foreign Relations, London Middle East Institute director Hassan Hakimian argues that they have not been particularly effective:

  • Iran has been sanctioned before, and was expecting these. It is better prepared than people realize.?
  • Oil is important to Iran, but it is not everything.? It is "large regional economy with a relatively diversified structure".
  • Other nations (North Korea, Cuba) have dealt with harsher sanctions for larger periods.?
  • Iran has options for its oil, it can enter barter arrangements, sell at a discount, or conduct transactions in other currencies, as it has in India.?
  • The sanctions have worsened problems in the Iranian economy, including inflation/high staple prices and unemployment. However, these problems primarily affect ordinary Iranians. The impact on the ruling elite is muted.
  • Iran's oil revenues have allowed it to build currency reserves of at least $80 billion. They aren't in danger of being unable to import essential goods in the near term.

Hopefully the talks will succeed. There have been promising signs, but Iran may be capable of surviving sanctions for some time to come.?

Roles small business marketing has to play

Companies that can staff a full small business marketing team have a great amount of flexibility to really improve a list and go after new leads. But that is not the case for most small businesses, with much smaller marketing teams. Many roles need to change and expand in modern day business, which small business marketing departments need to keep in mind as they move forward.

Small business marketing needs someone that can come up with a good strategy for their emails, someone to craft that content and someone who will be able to analyze this content. While not every company has enough people to fill individuals into each of these roles, they still need to be done, even if by just one person.

Even if one of the important roles of sending out marketing emails is taken away, such as analyzing results, the whole campaign can be at risk and there could be opportunities missed. Small business marketing departments need to figure out ways to make sure all of their bases are covered and be sure to not get in their own way.

Small business marketing professionals have to do it all much of the time, as they don't have the same resources as big business. Programs like CRM and marketing automation software can help businesses that are swamped with work be more efficient.

Mali transition off to rocky start after attack on president

Mali's one-year transition back to democratic rule got off to a shaky start on Tuesday amid fears the process may be derailed after president Dioncounda Traore was attacked by angry protesters.

The Economic Community of West African States mediators of the transition deal threatened sanctions against those responsible for the attack, which they said cast a shadow over the entire process.

ECOWAS "will carry out the necessary investigation to identify those responsible for this reprehensible attack and will apply the required sanctions," said Kadre Desire Ouedraogo, head of the ECOWAS commission, in a statement.

Burkina Faso's Foreign Minister Djibril Bassole, one of the main mediators, said the attack "raises questions about all the gains made towards normalisation and gives an absolutely disastrous image of the process under way in Mali."

The government has also vowed to get to the bottom of the attack while calling for calm in a statement read on national television.

"The government would like to reassure the local and international community that all measures will be taken to identify those responsible for the attack ... and prosecute them."

The statement highlighted the urgency of the transition to "re-establish territorial integrity" by winning back the north of the country which was seized by Tuareg and Islamist rebels in the days following a March 22 coup.

Stability in Bamako is urgently needed to address the crisis in the north which has seen some 350,000 flee their homes, according to UN figures.

Monday's attack came hours after mediators left the country pleased at having convinced coup leaders to accept a Traore-led 12-month transition back to democratic rule.

An angry crowd, which was in favour of the ouster of President Amadou Toumani Toure and does not want Traore leading the transition, besieged his offices despite the presence of hundreds of security guards.

They managed to gain access to his office, beating him badly enough to require a visit to the hospital where he underwent an examination of a head wound and back injury.

"He is walking on his own and is in possession of all his faculties, but he is a little tired," a family member said on condition of anonymity.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon also condemned the attack, and urged "the Malian military and security institutions to fulfill their primary function of protecting the State and its legitimate interim authorities," said his spokesman Martin Nesirky.

The African Union said the attack had undermined efforts to restore constitutional order and stressed the importance of "ensuring the security and safety of the transitional authorities".

Traore, 70, has remained out of sight since being released from hospital Monday afternoon, but his inner circle dismissed suggestions he would quit.

"Resigning now would play in the hands of those who are against Mali," a source from Traore's entourage said.

France's UN ambassador Gerard Araud told reporters in Abidjan on Monday that diplomatic efforts by ECOWAS have been "put seriously in danger by these latest developments (and) maybe other options will now have to be considered."

Anti-coup coalition the United Front for the Protection of Democracy and the Republic (FDR) expressed shock that "appropriate measures were not taken to protect the presidential palace and president" during the protest.

One protester was seriously injured and six others hurt as soldiers tried to stop them.

Mali, once one of west Africa's most stable democracies, was plunged into crisis when Captain Amadou Sanogo led a band of low-ranking soldiers to oust Toure's government.

On April 12 the putschists agreed on a return to civilian rule and Traore was inaugurated as interim leader, but the former junta refused ECOWAS proposals that he stay on for a 12-month transition period.

Politicians felt Sanogo had done an about-turn and was jockeying to lead the transition himself. But Sanogo on Sunday accepted a sweetened deal as he was offered all the benefits a former president would get, including housing, transport, security and an allowance.

As tensions remained in Bamako, the foreign minister of Ivory Coast, which currently holds the ECOWAS presidency, hinted at a hard stance from the bloc, which he said "cannot support this attitude," referring to the attack on Traore.

A 3,000-strong standby force from the west African region is ready for deployment if Mali requests it.

Crystal Bell: 'Dancing With The Stars' Finals Recap: Country Hoedown Throwdown

The battle for eternal Mirror Ball glory on "Dancing With the Stars" has never been this evenly matched heading into the finals. But after tonight's performances, I know who I'm placing my bets on.

If you asked me who I thought was going to be the Season 14 champion in Week 1, I would have said William Levy. He has the full package. (Get your mind out of the gutter, Bruno.) He's incredible handsome, has a rabid fan base and he's not a bad dancer. Sounds like a win-win, right? Wrong.

In the last couple of weeks, William's "shake my hips, show my chest" routine has gotten old. Take his freestyle as an example. It offered little variation from what we've already seen William do. Lo siento, William, but I like my "Dancing With the Stars" winner to show a bit more variety.

Then there's opera singer Katherine Jenkins. Not only is she beautiful, but in just 10 weeks, she's managed to charm the pants off American audiences. Do I need to show you a "naughty bits" montage to prove it? She's also one of the most technically skilled dancers the show has ever seen. If this were a competition based solely on precision, then Katherine would take it, but we all know "Dancing With the Stars" is more like a popularity contest than an actual dancing competition. And unfortunately, she doesn't quite have the fan base to win it all.

Donald Driver, on the other hand, has the talent, charisma and Packer Nation behind him, and after tonight's spectacular, jaw-dropping freestyle, I think he should start clearing off some room (maybe next to his Super Bowl ring?) for that coveted Mirror Ball trophy. He promised something "crazy," and he certainly delivered.

Of course, this is only my opinion, and after tonight's scores, it's Katherine that's No. 1 on the leaderboard, with a perfect 60, while William and Donald are both tied for second with scores of 59.

Starting off the night with the judges' picks, William and Cheryl got to redo their first cha-cha-cha. It just so happened to be William's first dance of the competition, so needless to say, it was a full-circle moment for the Cuban heartthrob. Before he was the "Latin James Bond," he was just a man who didn't know how to cha-cha-cha properly.

Bruno came in during rehearsals to help William ... or stare at his bottom ... I'm not quite sure. "Your hip action is just like sex on legs." Yep. It pretty much went like that.

On the floor, William showed the judges exactly how far he's come since Week 1. Len said it was as good as he's ever seen in "14 seasons of cha-cha-cha." Len must have taken his happy pills because I definitely didn't think it was the best cha-cha-cha ever.

Meanwhile, Katherine and Mark had to redo their Rock Week paso doble, which the judges originally felt was too agressive. Even headbangers have hair metal ballads, Katherine! The second time around, Katherine packed less of a punch and more finesse.

Bruno complimented her "vivid, lush artistry" and her masterful technique, which has been Katherine's strength since Week 1. Carrie Ann dubbed the Welsh songstress the "prima diva of the 'Dancing With the Stars' ballroom."

Katherine received her first 10 from Len, scoring her first perfect 30 of the competition, and all I have to say is, it's about time.

To quote host Tom Bergeron, "Donald and his partner, wearing most of a whole dress" needed to give their Argentine tango another go.

During rehearsals, Carrie Ann told Donald that content was lacking from his original performance, so for his redo, Donald really brought the heat to the ballroom. Unfortunately, Len thought he could have taken it a bit further, saying that it was "a tad careful." Much to the dismay of the audience, Len gave the football star a 9. Poor Donald. He just can't catch a break from Len.

In my opinion, Donald's performance may have told a story, but it was also a bit boring. I think he could have amped up his footwork.

As for the "make it or break it" freestyle round, William and Cheryl's freestyle was everything that you'd expect from William: a wind machine, a partially bare chest and bon-bon shaking. For Len, this routine was getting old, and the head judge was "fed up with it."

I never thought I'd say these words, but I agree with Len. William played it safe. Yes, Cheryl added a few lifts into the routine, but on the difficulty scale, they were on the moderate side. William could have done more, but he relied on what he knows best. Regardless, he knows his fans will still vote for him -- and that's completely fine.

It's the freestyle; you can do whatever you want. I just wish he would have gone out of his comfort zone and tried something different. I'm not saying that he should stop shaking his bon-bon -- no, never! -- but he had the chance to do something different and blew it. Of course, the ladies still love him, so his performance probably won't hurt him in the slightest.

William could have taken a lesson or two from Katherine and Mark's freestyle. The high-energy routine combined jive, quickstep, lindy hop and tap. It was a bold move, and it certainly paid off for the duo. Although, I didn't think it was as epic as the judges said it was.

Did anyone else think Katherine and Mark's lifts were a little sloppy? She lost her footing more than once, or at least that's what I saw on my TV screen. But I guess the judges thought differently because the they praised Katherine for her freestyle and gave her a perfect 30.

Even though I thought her lifts were off, I will say that Katherine's technique was incredible. It reminded me of J.R. Martinez's jive last year, which also incorporated some lindy hop and lifts.

However, the true game changer for me was Donald, who took the ballroom by storm with his country hoedown freestyle.

Donald and Peta, showing their Green Bay Packers pride in green and yellow cowboy costumes, strategized their freestyle like a football play. First, they analyzed their competition. "William will probably do a salsa and Katherine will stick to ballroom," Donald told Peta during rehearsal. Then, the duo prepared their defense: Do something unexpected. "No one expects us to come out to country music," said Donald. You're right, Donald, I didn't expect that at all. Lastly, they came up with unbeatable offense: Lifts, lifts and more lifts!

Throughout the season, Donald's athleticism has been his biggest strength. He can literally toss Peta around like a rag doll, and it's incredible to watch. I spent most of Donald's freestyle with my hands on the side of my face.

It was fun, energetic, jaw-dropping and everything you want a "Dancing With the Stars" freestyle to be. But most importantly, it was memorable, and it finally earned Donald that coveted 10 from Len -- and his first perfect score of the competition.

Kudos to Donald for knowing the "Dancing With the Stars" audience and staying true to his Packer Nation. His love of the show is one of the things that make Donald the most endearing contestant this season ... not to mention that he probably wants that Mirror Ball more than his competition does.

Also, his family (did you see his adorable children?!) and friends were all wearing Cheeseheads. Well played, Donald, well played. You definitely know how to play this game.

Who do you think deserves the Mirror Ball? The "Dancing With the Stars" Season 14 finale airs Tuesday, May 22 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
