5 Main Types of Ice Skating Sports | LockerLogic

Ice skating is a winter sport played throughout the year all over the world. There are several ways to glide on the ice, whether for recreation or for passion. Ice skates are initially intimidating, but people who use them often learn to love the activity. There?s so much variety in things you can do on the ice, and here are five of the most common and loved:

Figure Skating

Figure skating is a graceful activity where individuals, pairs, or groups perform different figures on ice. It has been an Olympic sport since the early 1900s, but people have also used it for skate dance and theatres on ice. Figure skaters need a pair of skates that have inside and outside edges and a groove on the bottom, as well as a toe pick used to execute certain jumps and manoeuvres.

Ice Hockey

Ice hockey is a popular sport that uses special skating gear for protection, speed, and mobility. Because it is a contact sport, players need to be able to skate at high speeds without worrying if their footwear will fall off. There are two types of ice hockey skates: a regular pair, and a goalie?s pair. Goaltenders? skates have lower ankle cuts, and the boot sits closer to the ice, allowing for better control around the net. It also has a covering near the base to protect the goalie?s feet from high-velocity puck shots.

A similar sport called ringette also uses ice hockey skates. It is combination of hockey and basketball, mainly played by women.

Bandy

Bandy is the ice equivalent of field hockey. This winter sport uses a ball instead of a puck, and the hockey stick is curvier, resembling the ones used for field hockey, and the goalkeeper doesn?t have a stick to save goals. Bandy skates have lower boots than ice hockey skates, often leaving the ankles uncovered. Its blade is also generally longer so players can achieve higher speeds.

Speed Skating

Racing or speed skating uses longer blades on their footwear. Another skate shoe called a clap skate has the shoe and blade connected on hinges, allowing deep edge turns without the boots hitting or cracking the ice.

Tour Skating

Tour skating uses Nordic skates with long detachable blades. These flat blades can attach to hiking boots or cross-country ski boots. These special skates are used in long-distance tour skating over natural ice.

Whatever ice sport it is you fancy, there?s a pair of ice skates for you. You can visit a local sporting goods shop, or go online to find the perfect pair you need.
