Hudson Catholic High School football preview 2012

HEAD COACH: LOU ZAMPELLA
YEAR WITH TEAM: 1ST
2011 RECORD: 3-7

TYPE OF OFFENSE: Multiple, I

OFFENSIVE STRENGTHS:

Senior Kevin Albert returns as the team's starting quarterback, as senior running backs Champion Smith and Jalen Carter will be featured in the backfield. Senior wide receiver Curtis Mullins figures to be one of Albert's primary targets on the outside. Seniors Josh Asmad and Christian Spiegel lead the way on the Hawks' offensive line, which will also include juniors Joe Labrutto and Bryant Gilliard.

"I think we have solid experience," said first-year coach Lou Zampella. "We've had some senior experience on offense, especially at the skill positions, in Albert, Smith and Carter. We have solid athletes."

TYPE OF DEFENSE: 4-3

DEFENSIVE STRENGTHS:

The Hawks' secondary will consist of junior Mike Simone, senior Jalil Nelson, as well as Albert at safety. On the defensive line, Gilliard and junior Jose Tapia are expected to start, while Labrutto, Smith and sophomore Marcus Monroe headline the team's contingent of linebackers. Zampella said he has been impressed with Labrutto, a junior, during the preseason.

COACH'S OUTLOOK:

Zampella enters his first year as a head coach, but third stint on the Hudson Catholic sideline. A two-time assistant coach for the Hawks, Zampella's resume also includes a stretch as defensive coordinator at St. Peter's University from 1999-2002.

"Right now my only goal is to get better each day. We just have to be disciplined and work hard," said Zampella, the program's fifth head coach in the past five years.

Zampella has worked quickly this summer, having only been named head coach in late July. He's filled out his coaching staff with a cast of former Hudson Catholic players, including John Calderone, John Wasilewski and Frank Marto. "I expect to play much harder than we did last year."
