'Max Payne 3' set to arrive later than expected

"May Payne 3": better late than never.

By Matthew Hawkins

Take-Two Interactive Software has announced the release date for "Max Payne 3," and it's two months later than previously expected. The new date is now May 15 of this year in North America for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 (May 18 internationally), and May 29 for the PC (June 1 for foreign markets).

As a result, "Max Payne 3" will become part of Take-Two's portfolio for the fiscal year ending in 2013, and will therefore not be part of fiscal 2012. Which, as Joystiq points out, will be a primary reason for Take-Two's net loss this year. One billion dollars in revenue was previously estimated, and that number is now taking a hit in the tune of $210 to 230 million.

A key Take-Two subsidiary, Rockstar Games, is developing and publishing the game. ?

In the end, Rockstar devotees will have to keep themselves occupied for a bit longer than expected. Initial reaction to the "Max Payne 3" announcement was slightly mixed, due to most everyone expecting and hoping for a fifth installment of the "Grand Theft Auto" franchise (which eventually happened, albeit a few months later).

But over time, the gaming public has warmed up to Max's return, and the response from among the press has been generally favorable.?Another encouraging sign comes from Remedy Entertainment, the original creators of "Max Payne" (who sold the franchise to Take-Two in 2002), who have been impressed by how Rockstar is treating Max, according to by Kotaku.

The pre-order deadline for the Special Edition of the game, which includes the game, a Max Payne statue, the soundtrack, skins for the multiplayer modes, and original still life prints (which are illustrations of the pain killers and various weapons that Max employs) has also been pushed back. The new date is?April 2.
