Put in this way: Within the next 13 days, the Redskins locker room and their fans will know whether John Beck or Rex Grossman has won this preseason?s quarterback competition.
In less than two weeks, coach Mike Shanahan has to declare a starter to run the offense against the New York Giants. Until then, though, Shanahan will continue to maintain that no decision has been made and the derby is ?very close.?
?Whoever wins the job, I feel very good about our quarterback position,? Shanahan said after practice Monday.
As for how long he will wait, he said: ?[Once a call is made], then we?ll make a decision if we want to say something before the game or go right up to the game.?
Although he cites practice performance as one of the factors, Shanahan has only one game-time chance to evaluate the quarterbacks ? both players are expected to play Thursday against Tampa Bay.
The Redskins? call: Go with the more athletic player (Beck) who is also a year younger, or the player (Grossman) who has far more experience, 34 regular season starts compared to four for Beck.
?It?s coming to a head pretty quickly,? Grossman said. ?I realize that but at the same time, I have a job to do and trying not to worry about things I have no control over. ? I would like to know but I?m not stressing about it.?
Said Beck: ?It?s exciting because I know a decision will be made [soon] and because right around the corner, we?re going to play the Giants.?
Heck, players on the Redskins? defense are awaiting the announcement.
?I am a little bit anxious to see who the guy will be,? cornerback DeAngelo Hall said. ?Nobody knows the formula or what?s going into this decision.?
Even if Shanahan doesn?t inform the public or the quarterbacks themselves of the decision, Grossman said ?we?ll have a decent idea,? when Giants Week preparation starts a week from Wednesday.
?He?s got a plan and knows what he?s doing and I?m going to follow that play,? Grossman said.
At least statistically, it?s tough to decipher who has the edge.
Grossman is 34-of-53 passing (64.2 percent) for 407 yards, two touchdowns, one interception and a 82.3 rating.
Beck is 20-of-27 passing (74.1 percent) for 248 yards, one touchdown, one interception and a 99.0 rating.
Now in his third training camp with offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, Grossman?s grasp has taken yet another step.
?I definitely think I?m making quicker decisions and playing with a pretty good comfort level,? he said. ?There are times when as a quarterback, you?re unsure of what?s going on out there or you?re unsure of the rhythm and timing of everything and you play a little bit scattered. I haven?t felt like that at all. I?m really happy with how I?ve been played.?
Beck, meanwhile, just wants reps. He hasn?t played a lot of football the last four years.
?I want to play as much as I can because for me, every rep is an added experience,? he said. ?I?ve yet to go through OTAs and mini camps with this team so that?s a lot of plays missed.?
Regardless of who starts, Beck said there is a confident tone to what the offense is doing in practice and games.
?I know as a team when we practice, you get the feeling we?re moving in the right direction,? he said. ?There?s a feeling of, ?We?re going to accomplish something. There?s a belief.?
