Planning for a hurricane a month ahead of time may feel like enough, but by this fall, some Collier County homeowners may want to begin reviewing their insurance policies for the 2012 hurricane season.
New data collected by the county and under review by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) could designate some local homes to be in a Special Flood Hazard Area. This would require owners with federally backed mortgages (including those from the Federal Housing Authority, the Department of Veterans Affairs, or Department of Agriculture, or from banks backed by the FDIC) to purchase flood insurance.
