Valentines Day 2013: The Best Dating Websites and Apps to Score ...

A lot of things happen around February 1st in Washington, D.C.: the weather gets even colder, people start planning for Presidents Day getaways, and most importantly, Valentines Day anxiety begins to slowly sink in. Flower stores around the city start pre-ordering bouquets for office deliveries, the nicer restaurants in town begin to receive a flood of reservations, and those left in the lurches with no significant other in their lives begin to feel the aching pain of loneliness as the world?s most romantic holiday slowly descends upon them.

With that said, I?ve learned that the best way to overcome the inevitable Valentines Day blues is to score yourself a hot ?sumpin? sumpin? in the form of a V-Day date. And since we live in one of the pinnacle highs of technological modernization, it only makes sense that you use every tool at your disposal to help you in the battlefield that we call love.

That?s right. I?m talking about online dating.

With one out of three relationships being made through dating websites and the unprecedented proliferation of sites like Match.com and OkCupid, the negative stigma of using the interwebs to find love has long since ebbed compared to the early 2000?s when only sexual predators found love online. This applies particularly to those living in the Washington, D.C. area, where an unusually high number of young professionals that are to busy to go out to bars to find dates rely on online sites to support their love life.

Considering there are an overwhelming number of online dating options to choose from, I?ve decided to help all of you love-lorn folks out there by giving a quick review/summary of the best sites to use and what ?type? of love these tools are best for finding.

Here is a quick breakdown of the best online dating sites/apps to use, as well as the price of each platform:

  • Love Type - Those Looking to Meet Romantic Interests Through Friends

    Price - Free

Hinge is pretty awesome because it's an iPhone app (I'm a staunch believer that if there's something I can't do on my phone, it's probably not worth doing) and they leverage your Facebook connects to find that romantic match. It's a perfect tool for young professionals that would rather use their massive pre-made social network to find that right somebody instead of crawling through tons of (potentially fake) online profiles. Hinge is launching their mobile app February 8th, be sure to check it out!

  • Love Type - Hookups (mostly)

    Price - Free

OkCupid is typically used for the more ephemeral of romantics out there. It's typically got a great success rate for those trying to find dates, and you can rapidly meet lots of people with little to no effort/extended messaging. People pretty much know why they come here - to meet some cuties, and then to hook up with said cuties. This site is also recommended for those who don't want to pay for an online dating site.

  • Love Type - Girlfriend-Boyfriend material/extended relationships

Price - $20.99 for one month (fluctuates by plan)

Match is pretty solid choice for those who really want to start searching for that real special somebody. It's a great tool to rack up some fun nights out, meet some interesting people, and for many, create an actual relationship with somebody over the course of several dates. If you're they kind of person looking for a quick hookup, I don't suggest using Match. If you're looking to find someone that's bf/gf material, then yeah, this is the site to use. For those trying to keep the budget tight, fair warning: you do have to pay to use this site.

  • Love Type - Marriage, Kids, and a Little House With a White Picket Fence

Price - $59.95 for one month (fluctuates by plan)

eHarmony is the nuclear option of dating. People who jump on the eHarmony bandwagon are typically looking for someone to, as Beyonce would say, 'put a ring on it.' I typically notice older demographics gravitating towards the site, and the people who use it are typically looking for somebody they can hunker down with for the rest of their life. Judging from what many friends and reviews online say about the site, it's quite effective. For marriage. If you're into that sort of thing.

  • Love Type - I Just Met You, This is Crazy. Let's Go Bang. And I'll Text You Maybe.

    Price - Free

Tinder is a relatively new app that has a lot of people buzzing because it has boiled down online dating into a yes-no question: would you sleep with me or not. Considered to be the heterosexual equivalent of Grindr, Tinder is an iPhone app that finds local singles in your area and hooks you up depending on if there's a mutual attraction or not. You flip through numerous photos of the opposite sex (or same sex depending on your preference), and you basically 'like' them or 'not'. If you both consider each other mutually like-able, the app informs you both and you can start messaging each other. Pretty much good for hook ups, and that's about it. Also, it's free. So that's awesome too.

  • Love Type - I'm hooked on G-O-D, and your eyes too.

Price - $29.99 for one month (fluctuates by plan)

Christina Mingle is pretty straight forward - it's a dating site made for those interested in looking for love while keeping the faith. Highly suggest for those looking for somebody with Christian values, or for those who have overbearing parents that want you to date more nice Christian girls.

  • Love Type - I'm looking to date within the tribe

Price - $36.99 for one month (fluctuates by plan)

Similar to Christian Mingle, this is a dating site built for Jewish singles interested in dating other Jewish singles. In terms of faith, the type of users range from non-practicing Jews to practicing ones, and it's pretty much a solid option for those trying to find that special somebody within the tribe.

  • Love Type - Before I walk towards the light, I want someone's hand holding mine

Price - $53.97 for one month (fluctuates by plan)

This is a dating site for ages 50+, and is basically made for those looking for the right partner to spend the rest of their life with. Since I don't really known that many people who use it (pretty much double the age of my demographic), I can't really speak for how effective it is, but judging by the slew of positive reviews I'll venture to say that it's pretty solid.
